The Bill proposed in the Florida House of Representatives sought to ban the sale/transfer

and possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The bill defined assault

weapons as firearms capable of semi-automatic, automatic or burst fire at the option of the user

(HB 627, 2020). They can fire a round each time the user pulls the trigger. As much this bill has

been met by some criticism, I believe it is a positive step towards addressing the issue of gun

violence. High-capacity magazines or assault weapons have been used repeatedly to commit

horrible mass shootings. They contributed to the many unfortunate incidents of gun violence in

different communities around the US. I believe that these are weapons meant for war and should

not have a place in civilian society. The Florida House of Representatives should see this bill as a

priority to keep these weapons out of communities because having things weapons within

communities any longer endangers many lives.

There are various intended outcomes if the bill is passed into law. First, it will lead to a

reduction of horrific mass-casualty shootings that have been witnessed in the past. High-capacity

magazines and assault weapons are increasingly being used in cities experiencing high levels of

gun violence. In 2017, a study found that high-capacity magazines constituted about 36% of gun-

related crimes in the US (McNew, 2019). In 2018, Gary Tuggle, an Interim Police Commissioner

stated that over one-third of guns that had been recovered in the process of criminal

investigations were equipped either assault weapons or guns equipped with high-capacity

magazines (McNew, 2019). If the bill is passed, I believe gun-related violence will decrease

significantly.

Secondly, the bill is expected to go a long way to help reduce organized crimes, drug

cartels, and firearms trafficking. High-capacity weapons and assault weapons are normally
