TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2 ERRORS: AN APPLICATION FROM HR, HIRING 2
Type 1 and Type 2 Errors: an Application from HR Hiring
From the perspective of the HR hiring process, type I error entails accepting an applicant
for a job position who ought to be rejected during the recruitment process. This error leads to
wrong signals and warnings, which are inexistent, thus leading to poor decision-making (Noe et
al., 2015). It is also referred to as a false positive error. Type II error, on the other hand, entails
the act of rejecting the applicant who is most suited for the job and thus should have been
considered for the job offer (Moffa, 2011). This error leads to the failure to give a warning about
uncertainties and may lead to a false negative error of judgments because crucial information
about the prevailing situation is not provided.
Type I and Type II Decision Error Costs
It is costly to commit type I error because accepting the wrong staff and rejecting the
right staff leads to a false positive, which results in disastrous waves in the productivity of the
employee (Noe et al., 2015). The staff will not be able to deliver to the expectation of the
organization and may sometimes give false outcomes and signals, which may mislead the
organization to make a false decision (Moffa, 2011). Type 2 error is costly because it leads to a
false positive signal where the employee deliberately fails to caution the organization about a
disastrous event or organizational challenges that exist.
The decision error that is more likely to be discovered by the management is the type I
error because it is more costly than type II error. This difference it the costs of the two types of
errors affect the HR manager's hiring decisions by completing it to consider all the instances of
the hiring process to ascertain the probabilities underlying the decision-making process on a
case-by-case basis to minimize the costs of making either error (Moffa, 2011).
