THE STARS AND THE MILKY WAY 2
The Stars and the Milky Way
The Milky Way galaxy is the conglomeration of celestial bodies of which the Solar
System is part of. The existence of the galaxy is also characterized by a gross generalization of
bodies, and even those that play significant roles are given equal treatment as their lesser
counterparts playing similar roles in other systems or even trivial bodies. A galaxy itself is
composed of multiple million solar systems, gases, moons, floating rocks and comets among
multiple other bodies yet to be discovered. Of the most important are the stars especially those at
the center of their solar systems.
The sun is the star found at the center of the Solar System the planet earth is found. The
roles including providing heat, light and gravitational force that holds all the nine planets in
position on their orbits are just but some of the phenomena science are yet to completely unravel.
However, the sun has fallen victim of generalization, often being considered as just a star like
other stars in the Milky Way. By just shining, the sun already represents a common characteristic
of a larger group, yet being representative denies the chance to unravel other definite
characteristics of the sun that would distinguish it from other average stars. Perhaps the fact that
the sun accounts for almost the entire mass of its solar system, up to 99.86% should not be
ignored nor the reality that at one time the sun will consume the planets around it (Sun Facts).
Maybe, of most importance, the fact that the sun houses the only life-supporting planet known to
man so far should also not be quickly wished away.
