Paid Parental Leave
Abstract
Programs stipulating paid parental-leave for new parents and to care for family illness are
common in many nations except the United States. Although America is among the wealthy
countries, it only provides unpaid Parental-Leave, often inaccessible by many marginalized
communities, and sparks disparities in the socioeconomic lens. President Biden has proposed the
enactment of paid parental-leave to cater to the needs of new parents and sick family members by
allowing them to meet these needs while still being produced. The program will cost approximately
$200 billion, which might have long-term implications for the country's budget and debt if not
correctly implemented. The primary sources of revenue will comprise tax deductions from
individuals earning $400,000 and above yearly while exempting low-income earners. The program
is associated with numerous benefits based on the analysis of various studies. Some of the benefits
comprise; reduced infant and child mortality due to increased care and exclusive breastfeeding,
on-time vaccination, and increased involvement by fathers. The program will also bridge the
gender disparities in employment as women fight between family and career. The cons can
comprise abuse of the program by employees and financial costs associated with its
implementation. However, the benefits of the program outweigh the negative impact. Hence,
enacting the program and allowing American employees to benefit from the policy will enable the
country to join other wealthy nations in offering Paid Parental-Leave.
