Category Theory for Scientists (Old Version) David I. Spivak September 17, 2013 How can mathematics make this diagram meaningful? 2 Preface An early version of this book was put on line in February 2013 to serve as the textbook for my course Category Theory for Scientists taught in the spring semester of 2013 at MIT. The second difference is that I will write up solutions to the book’s (approximately 280) exercises; some of these will be included in the published version, whereas the rest will be available by way of a password-protected page, accessible only to professors who teach the subject. 3 4 Contents 1 Introduction 1.1 A brief history of category theory . . 1.2 Intention of this book . . . . . . . . 1.3 What is req ...
