Performance Evaluation Proposal
Performance evaluation is a procedure that is both productive and formal and is used as a
form of measure in gauging an employee’s results and work at a company based on his or her
responsibilities. More so it can be said to gauge the value added to the company in terms of
revenues, customer base or even investments. This may be performed after a number of years or
annually and forms the basis of whether an employee will be promoted or demoted.
Performance evaluation is critical and very important to a company in that it acts as a report
card of an employee’s performance in the company from the managers, the same employee’s
strengths can be deduced and his or her roles fine-tuned to suit these strengths. Performance
evaluation is used as a ground to synchronize the thought of both the employees and the employers
as well as improving an organizations way of doing things thus improving its function ability in
general (Mohrman, Reuick-West, & Lawler 55). It is important in that it puts the employees on
their toes, instead of them being relaxed and unbothered by their jobs, they will strive to perform
to the best for them to get good records and more so be promoted to higher ranks.
There are a number of ways that performance appraisal can be done. The first one is
through focusing on the objectives. The employer and the employee both plan and come up with
goals that the employee need to achieve within a certain duration. The second method is the 360

feedback method where each employee or employer gives feedback on their workmates as well as
self, thus ensuring the feedback is gotten with totality from all sides. The third method is based on
the assessment center with people being faced by the same social situation. It is effective in that
they are asked to participate in activities, which are used to gauge their ethics, problem solving
skills and tolerance (Sandler & Keefe 28). Other methods are based on behavior of a person, the
psychology of a person, is mostly used in unearthing his or her potential, and finally is through the
costing methods, which looks at the benefits an employee brings to the company versus the amount
he or the company pays.
For an employees to have good standing with the management. He or she should have a
very thorough explanation of how they will be of value to the company and more so the
management should consider their plans. First, they need to show the benefits the company will
get by following the guidelines or approach. Second, the guidelines should be well-articulated and
explained to give a good and clear picture of how the company will succeed by following them.
Third, be knowledgeable on the process and where it can suit best as it will not prosper in all type
of situation but in some (Ballowe). Finally, the key to coming up with a good buy-in is by first
getting to know what the managers are interested in, which is a good start.
After all this, it is important that an employee get the feedback of his or her assessment as
it will help them work on the negatives and improve on the positives to get a good report the next
time. However, it is important to look at the way the information is relayed as some employees
may be so sensitive (Sandler & Keefe 47). Therefore the manager should be very specific and on
a one on one basis with the employee. The manager should ensure it is between the two of them
and should do it calmly giving the employee hope and not diminishing it.
