Course Project Worksheet Measures of
Variability
Using Figure 4.7, How to Choose a Measure of Variation, on p. 164 of Social Statistics for a Diverse
Society, determine the correct measure of variability based on the levels of measurement for your
variables from Week 1 and complete the following worksheet.
Independent Variable 1
Parent/Guardian Transportation
Justification: Range and Interquartile Range
Being able to identify one of the independent variables as parent schedule conflicts which
will be measured at an ordinal level allows for the variable to measure in range and interquartile
range for measures of variability. Salkind & Frey (2019) explained that the range is most often
used to find the distance in values from the highest to the lowest. Through the use of survey
responses, interviews, and observations the data collected for the particular study will be best
demonstrated in range to identify the measure of variability.
Level of Measurement: Ordinal
Transportation availability is an ordinal level of measurement as it will be represented
clearly by the parents/guardians taking the survey in which school community events were more
popular to attend than others. Frankfort-Nachmias (2019) explained that ordinal levels of
measurement are demonstrated by ranking the values in order from lowest to highest. In this
particular case, parents/guardians will indicate through a survey or questionnaire which school
community events were more achievable to attend with transportation. Parents//guardians will
have had specific events to choose from where transportation was an issue or not for the
