PETRARCH AND THE LOVE LYRIC 2
“Petrarch and the Love Lyric”
“Petrarch and the Love Lyric, written by Francis Petrarch, is one of the renaissance’s
poems that seems most relatable today. Petrarch, in his sonnet, talks about a man who is
confused about his feelings, which he had undergone in his youth time (Puchner et al., 2014).
The main topic of concern is the concept of love. Through the sonnet, Petrarch hopes that he
encounters compassion and sympathy. He has the hopes of awakening the feelings of the readers
and looks at his love feelings by analyzing it now and the later years. Petrarch talks about the
pain of rejected love, the passion that does not spill, and the unfulfilled hopes. He is not poured
into the feelings which have overflowed, but he is rather reminiscing his past love.
In relation to today's songs, Petrarch is following the poetry traditions in the vernacular,
which, according to scholars, it was primarily created for love songs. In this sonnet, Petrarch
lyrically contrasts nature to the city by bounding the poet’s inner freedom (Puchner et al., 2014).
The beauty of today’s world is related to the beauty of Laura, the woman that Petrarch loved.
After creating the sonnet in a unique artistic style of the renaissance, his style had an impact
later, especially on the songs and poems produced. Just like contemporary songs, the poem treats
a variety of subjects and moods but particularly the concept of love. Petrarch’s poem has
frequently been repeated by today's sonneteers and has also become poetic clichés. However,
there are some aspects of the poems’ treatment of love that seem most unfamiliar. The lyric
frequently focuses on the poet’s beloved as the source of his sorrow, grief, and self-destruction.
Unlike most songs, the poet accused his lover of taking liberties that are sadistic with his
emotions. He is trying to woo his lover with his poem by expressing his sadness and unequitable
love.
