My prediction is that in the next coming years, population will exponentially increase.
This is because as time passes, more technological developments will be made, which will
improve the well-being of most people. Therefore, the population will increase exponentially
as their living standards improve.
2. [6 points] Explain one negative impact of the Green Revolution in detail. (Why is it
happening? How will this impact us in the future?)
The green uprising involves a period of increased agricultural activities as a result of
technological advances. Even if the period had significant benefits, it was associated with
some negative impacts. The use of chemical fertilizers during that period significantly
affected the environment and society. The use of these chemicals from fertilizers, pesticides
to herbicides negatively impacted the environment by increasing erosion and pollution. The
new materials introduced into the plants and soil polluted both the soil and water resources.
The adverse effects of the green revolution will impact us in the future in various ways. For
one, the pollution of soil will result in low soil quality, which will increase the risks of
topsoil erosion, meaning the rates of drought will increase in the future. Secondly, the use of
chemical substances will cause other problems such as new crop diseases, which will destroy
crops increasing chances of hunger.
3. [6 points] The environmental impact of humans depends on population, affluence, and
technology (I=PAT). Explain how population, affluence, and technology each affect our
environmental impact (explain each individually).
Increasing the population will affect the environment in several ways. First, as the
population increase, so will the demand for land and resources. As a result, the rapid growth
of the population may be a threat to biodiversity. This means people will have to increase
their destructive activities and intensify cultivation, which could result in loss of biodiversity
as well as an ecological imbalance.
Also, affluence can negatively impact the environment through increased consumption.
Each used product will have its adverse effects. For example, affluence will increase per
capita resources meaning most people will avoid using public transport and purchase private
cars. As the number of vehicles increases, so is the environmental pollution from gas
emissions.
Technology can increase efficiency and, at the same time, minimize overall
environmental impacts. With technological advancements, people can now use electric cars
rather than gasoline cars, reducing gas emissions.
