Homework Assignment #3, Math 738/838, Spring 2020
Due Friday 3/13/2020
Page 1of 24
I want the completed assignment handed in electronically through myCourses as a
PDF document. You can upload the completed assignment through the
Assignment page on myCourses. Do note email your completed assignment to
the instructor they must be submitted through myCourses (Canvas). Important:
in the name of the file that you submit please be certain to include your name
(last name, then first name), the course number, and the assignment number;
this helps greatly with grading.
You may discuss the homework with each other; however, you must turn in your
own original solutions no copying. The intent is that you may participate in
a study group, but you must do your own work. Remember, copying someone
else’s work and presenting it as your own is cheating (and stealing from them).
If you have any questions about cheating, then I suggest that you read the
student handbook section on academic honesty. Access the handbook at
https://www.unh.edu/student-life/09-academic-honesty. The rules will be
enforced.
Please show all work for each answer; i.e., show how you arrived at the answer.
Also, in order to get full credit, where asked to use JMP to answer questions
you must turn in a copy of the portion of the JMP output that is relevant to
your solution. If you use other software, then you still must include screenshots
from that output that support your answers. Do Not just write down answers,
in order to get full credit I need to see the basis for your answers and any
relevant JMP (other software) output upon which your answer is based. For
JMP users, remember the selection tool (fat plus sign) on the Cursor Tool Bar
can be used to copy paste output from JMP to other applications.
1 (50 pts) The JMP dataset ArmyBodyData.jmp contains data on physical
measurements and For this data there is no issue with missing values. The
continuous target or response is %BodyFat; we wish to build a regression
model to predict a soldier’s percent body fat without directly measuring it
a difficult and time consuming measurement process. There are 22
candidate predictors.
We will use Validation as a part of this exercise. Your JMP data table
contains a column called Validation, which separates the data into a
Training and Validation set. In each of the JMP analysis platforms there
will be box called Validation where one can enter the column containing a

Validation variable, if one exists in the dataset. JMP will automatically use
the declared Validation column to perform validation analysis.
Step a. Use the Fit Model platform to fit a full model for %BodyFat;
the model should contain the 22 candidate predictors. Be certain to
place the Validation column in the Validation box in the launch
dialog window. Using the Fit Model report do the following:
i. Examine the residual plot for evidence of lack of fit and/or
outliers. Describe any potential LOF patterns or suspected
outliers. We will not take action at this time to alleviate any
LOF if it is discovered.
There is a severe lack of fit of the residual plot. Clearly the model needs either a
transformation of the response of transformation of the predictor variables.
