SPSS Week 2: Visual Displays of Data
Visual or graphic displays send a more powerful message to the viewer than tabular or
other representations of sets of data, so care must be taken to ensure that the message is accurate
and does not mislead or deceive, which would leave the viewer with the wrong impression of the
importance of the display (Sullivan, 2017).
From the simple bar graph figure above, I have presented the mean number of hours that
the two different sexes, male and female, work in a week. The respondent’s sex is an ordinal
value, while the mean number of hours worked in a week is a scale value. The use of the simple
bar graph is a good way to present the relationship in working hours of the two sexes because
they are easy to interpret. In the figure above, one can see that on average, men work for slightly
longer hours than women. Representing the data above in a bar graph also has a disadvantage.
Due to its simplistic nature, it would require additional explanation since it fails to expose causes
of the difference in the mean of hours worked per week by the two sexes as well as any patterns
that exist in the data. This, however, can be bypassed with editing the graph to make it
multilayered and three-dimensional. For instance, the number of male and female respondents is
not displayed in the simple bar graph above.
