A deductive argument is a kind of argument where the arguer intends to be deductively true, that is, to present a valid conclusion provided that the argument’s premises are true. In other words, when one makes a deductive argument, the premises must strongly support the conclusion. With this in mind, it would be impossible for the conclusion to be invalid. Thus, when the premises of the argument successfully back the conclusion, it is called a deductively valid argument. Here is an example of a valid deductive argument: Premise: All greenhouse gases contribute to climate change. Premise: Carbon dioxide and Nitrous oxide are greenhouse gases. Conclusion: Therefore, Carbon dioxide and Nitrous oxide exacerbate climate change. The conclusion follows the word “therefore.” Hence, the two premises in this argument: (1) all greenhouse gases contribute to climate change & (2) Carbon dioxide and Nitrous oxide are greenhouse gases are valid since it is based on facts and well-founded.
