KENNEDY, JOHN F. “INAUGURATION ADDRESS
The "Inauguration Address" is a public address by John F Kennedy during his
inauguration as the president of the United States on the 20
th
of January, 1961. In the speech, he
announced that the US would pay any price, bear any burden, support their allies, oppose any
enemy, and meet any hardship to make sure that liberty survives and succeeds. In his speech,
Kennedy outlined what his course would be during his reign. He also mentioned the vision he
had for America and the rest of the world and urged the citizens to join him in the course.
The purpose of the inauguration address was to call for peace across the nations mainly.
He reminded them of the aftermath of the war and the peace they had bitterly and hard-earned
and urged them to maintain it(Meagher, 2018). He calls upon nations to focus on the problems
that bring them together and not the ones that tear them apart. He offers peace to everyone from
the states to the allying nation. He offers a safe haven free of war and urges that they not use
forearms even though they have and need them. He claims that if all nations unite and work
together peacefully, we can fight our common enemy as humanity, which is poverty, tyranny,
disease, and war.
The speech supports the logos claim, where he urges both sides to focus on the problems
that unite them instead of dwelling on those divides on them. The speech supports ethos claim
where he offers to support other nations, pledges loyalty of friendship and unity. Pathos claim is
seen in the speech where he invoked the emotions of the public by highlighting the plight of the
poor nations and offered to support them (Meagher, 2018). An opposing side is mentioned when
Kennedy says that to those who choose to be their adversaries, they are offered a request that
both sides seek peace before the destruction of humanity happens after offering others an appeal.
The speech applied the Rogerian method of argumentation. In the Rogerian argumentative
