Becoming an effective leader calls for service to your followers. The essence of having a
leader is to ensure that the team will have someone to look up to in terms of how he or she
relates to others. Servant leadership is a philosophy in leadership where the main goal is to serve.
There are different fundamental principles of servant leadership and which see better service
delivery to the followers. One of the principles is listening, whereby the leader is more
concerned with the views of the members as compared to giving out commands. Servant
leadership is all about following what others are saying as long as it’s the right thing as
compared to dictating to them what needs to be done. Empathy is another fundamental principle
where a leader is able to understand the team members and define how best to relate with them
(Martin, 2019). Self-awareness is a principle that ensures one defines their emotional intelligence
and therefore knows how best to react to issues. Leaders will be faced with different situations,
which requires different reactions. A servant leader should hence be able to handle the different
team members effectively and fairly. Lastly, commitment to the growth of the people is another
attribute where the leader is expected to ensure progress among his or her team members.

Present two qualities of servant leadership and explain how they support interprofessional
communication in providing patient care.
Communication as a principle of servant leadership is essential in supporting the
provision of patient care. There needs to be a connection between the professionals to define
what the progress and the needs are (Martin, 2019). Without a proper communication process,
patient care will not blossom. Another servant leadership principle is self-awareness, which helps
appreciate oneself as well as others. With the knowledge of the other professionals, it will be
easy to communicate and therefore share ideas on better patient care approaches.
