Hello everybody, today I’m going to be speaking with you about my AP piece which was done
on the impact of climate change on marine biodiversity.
Slide 2-Thesis Statement
In my thesis statement I attempted to identify a few specific things, that I could later
expand on and argue. First climate change has become a reality faster than one might have
expected. Most of us know that the problem is caused by many factors, mostly out of human
activities but presently, the effect of carbon dioxide from human activities stands out as a
significant cause of climate change. We need to understand that the gas stimulates the weakening
of the ozone layer which ultimately causes an imbalance in the marine ecosystem. It is worth
noting that, although alternative means of climate change control exist, Ecosystem-based
Adaptation which is also known as EbA, presents a more viable option. The EbA approach
provides a feasible strategy towards curbing climate change in comparison with traditional
scientific methods.

As I’ve earlier indicated, human activities constitute the most significant cause of climate
change but let's expand on this. I'm sure everyone that is sat here today resonates with the effects
of deforestation and burning of fossil fuels and that these activities increase the amount of
dioxide in the atmosphere. Emissions and pollutants from the burning of fossils directly raise the
levels of carbon dioxide in the environment. We can’t burn all the fossils if we want to avoid
disaster. The carbon dioxide emissions from the burning fuels wear out the ozone layer, leading
to global warming. It is important that you note that the effect of global warming is not good. I
want you to imagine a situation where global warming leads to adverse effects like upsurges in
water temperatures, rising sea levels, and decreased sea-ice conditions. In the long run, the
effects of the ozone layer depletion interfere with marine biodiversity habitats as a consequence
of these effects. Similarly, deforestation initiates the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere thus causing acidity of seawater once the gas dissolves in the water. The acidity in
the sea creates a hostile environment for aquatic organisms such as corals and fish. If we look at
the diagram on the screen, it gives a clear picture of the current state of the environment due to
human activities.
Slide 4-Coverage
So now we need to ask ourselves what is the extent of this effect… well biodiversity such
as vegetation and corals play crucial roles in the marine ecosystem. The aquatic vegetation
provides habitats to the marine animals. Equally, the vegetation, including mangrove, enhances a
balance in the marine ecosystem through the provision of food to the fauna species. If we extend
the importance of vegetation beyond the seas, we realize that the vegetation on the land helps in
reducing the level of accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. On the other hand,
aquatic animals like corals help in the formation of coral reefs that provide homes to many other
