A police officer’s job is about ensuring the protection of basic moral rights, including the right to life, liberty, physical and property security. The overall outcome or goal of policing is the protection of constitutional rights. However, there have been times when police have engaged in unethical and immoral practices when doing their job which have resulted in important U.S. Supreme Court decisions.

Research and find a U.S. Supreme Court case that addresses unethical police decisions or immoral practices by the police. Provide a brief synopsis of the case and discuss how the Supreme Court views procedural justice and/or police misconduct.

Judging Yourself

You are a judge who believes that individuals should be allowed to choose when to die.

You personally had to watch both your parents die long and agonizing deaths because your state does not have a right-to-die statute. Before you is a doctor who is being prosecuted for giving a lethal dose of morphine to a patient dying of terminal cancer. The family of the patient did not want the prosecution, the majority of the public is not in favor of the prosecution, but the prosecutor believes that if there is a law in place, it should be enforced. The doctor has opted for a bench trial.

Adversarial Criminal Law System

Create a 15 to 20 minute powerpoint presentation or video comparing the idea of our criminal law system as adversarial to other descriptions of how a courtroom works.

The assignment should include the following:

•Submissions must be thought provoking and provide a critical analysis of the criminal law system.

•If you select the PowerPoint presentation, it must contain a minimum of 20 slides.

In a 2-3 page, APA style paper, describe the types of misconduct by community corrections professionals and provide some of the explanations for this misconduct.

Examples include:

•Accepting gratuities for special consideration during legitimate activities and for the protection of illicit activities.

•Mistreatment/harassment or extortion of inmates.

•Misc. abuses

•Arbitrary use of power

•Abusing authority for personal gain (possible reasons for misconduct:  hiring people that shouldn't work in corrections, officers being stressed and burned out, failure of leadership and lack of discipline, lack of training and lack of organizational support.)
