The Research Paper. Topic. Each student’s is required to do a short RESEARCH paper involving the current peacekeeping operations of the United Nations. The paper may either focus on a specific peacekeeping operation OR one of the problems associated with United Nations peacekeeping operations. If the former, the paper should be divided into three sections: (1) the purpose and origin of the operation; (2) the current status of the mission; and (3) an evaluation of the degree to which the mission can be considered a success or failure. If the latter the paper should identify the problem, causes of the problem, and degree to which it is being addressed and corrected. The paper should be between 6-8 double spaced pages in length but may be longer if necessary; however, in no case should the study exceed 12 pages of text, including footnotes or endnotes but excluding the Bibliography. A listing of the UN’s currently operating 13 peacekeeping missions, plus its current Special Mission in Afghanistan, can be obtained on line by simply Googling “current United Nations peacekeeping missions.” If still available, an article detailing some of the most recent criticisms of UN peacekeeping operations can be found at: http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/africa/item/16746-un-peacekeepingtroops-face-scandals-on-sex-crimes-corruption NOTE: The deadline for choosing your topic is Friday, February 28th. Prior to that date a unit will be opened on the Discussion Board on which you can indicate your choice. No more than 3 students can work on the same country or topic, so it will be first come first served in terms of getting your choice based on the time of your posting. If you do not hear from the instructor during the first week of March, you may assume your topic has been accepted. Presentation. All papers must be fully documented, with either Chicago style footnotes or endnotes (NO in text-citations, please), and include a bibliographical list of sources, including the website and dates of access of any Internet sources used in researching the paper. A guideline for the Notes and Bibliography will be posted under Information on Blackboard. As for documentation, if in doubt, document. No one has ever gotten into trouble in terms of plagiarism by overly documenting. The papers must also be well written. This is a college course, even if an introductory one. Papers are therefore expected to be written and submitted with proper grammar, in typed form, and without typographical or spelling errors. So...proofread carefully, you will be penalized one point per typo or grammatical error. Research Requirements. Although short, the paper is meant to be a genuine research piece, not a cut-and-paste operation involving a summary of the information in one or two sources. It also means going well beyond Web Sites.. Hence, research on this assignment should involve at least five different sources drawn from at least three (3) different resource bases (the Unpublished Internet sources, books, scholarly articles, interviews, recent newspaper accounts, etc), If needed, please seek the assistance of the Library’s staff; they are exceedingly knowledgeable and helpful. And remember, Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source. It has become better in policing its many inaccuracies; however, any Site on which anyone can post is ultimately of reliable value to no one. So be sure you know who your sources are in terms of the authority (person) and organization. Happily, the Internet lets you check both with a few seconds extra work on Google or whatever other search engine you use.. Dates: All papers are due in hard copy form no later than Monday, May 5 th. Please note, this date is absolute, no matter how desperate your condition may later become. In all instances the instructor will be happy to grade provisionally, and with comments for improvements, any paper submitted prior to April 15th. 2
