SIOP Reflections and Lesson Plan In this document you will compile a series of SIOP component reflections and post your SIOP Lesson Plan. Reflections: Reflect on the following discussion questions listed at the end of the SIOP book chapters. Please provide a three to five sentence paragraph for each question. Chapter 2: Lesson preparation. Question # 2 on page 61 What are some of the advantages to writing both content objectives and language objectives for students to hear and see? How might written objectives affect teacher and student performance in the classroom? Chapter 3: Building background. Question # 2 on page 93. Some educators argue the importance of connecting new information to English language learners’ own cultural backgrounds in order to make content concepts meaningful. Others disagree, stating that students relate more to popular American influences (e.g., “adolescent culture”) than they do to their parents’ traditional cultural practices. What are some merits and problems with both positions? What about ELs born in the United States who have never lived in their native cultural setting? Chapter 4: Comprehensible input. Question # 2 on page 114. Have you recently been in a situation where you were not an “insider”, and therefore you didn’t understand what was being said? Compare that situation, and your feelings about it, to the way language is used in classrooms where there are English learners. As a teacher, what can you do to make sure all students are able to follow a lecture or discussion? Chapter 5: Strategies. Question # 3 on page 141. If the concept of scaffolding may be somewhat new for you, the definition in the glossary may be helpful, as may be the following construction analogy. Picture a high-rise building as it is under construction. As new stories are added, scaffolding is built along the outside of the previously constructed floor (or level). This scaffolding allows access for the construction workers – they need to be able to get into the upper stories in order to continue the building process. Think of a content topic that you must teach that is challenging to students acquiring English as a second (or multiple) language. What types of scaffolds must you put in place for your students to successfully access your content and language objectives? Chapter 6: Interaction. Question # 4 on page 170. English learners are often reticent to contribute to class discussions. An important role for an SIOP teacher is to encourage ELs to participate in nonthreatening ways. What are some specific techniques you can use to encourage students to elaborate on their responses and express their thoughts fully? What can you do to ensure sufficient wait time for students to formulate and express their thoughts? Chapter 7: Practice/Application. Question # 2 on page 190. Compare and contrast the following two teachers’ approaches to teaching a lesson on nutrition. Which of the approaches to teaching this content concept is most appropriate for English learners? How do you know? Be as specific as you can. Chapter 8: Lesson delivery. Question # 2 on page 208. Reflect on a lesson that you taught or observed that did not go well. What happened? Can you identify a feature in Lesson Delivery that might have caused the lesson to be less successful? Or a feature from another SIOP® component? In retrospect, how might the lesson delivery have been improved? Chapter 9: Review and assessment. Question # 2 on page 237. Many teachers introduce key vocabulary at the beginning of the lesson but often neglect to revisit the new terms systematically throughout the lesson and review them at its conclusion. How can you ensure that an SIOP® lesson’s key academic vocabulary is reviewed at the end of each lesson? Describe a variety of ways you would review the terms, as well as the techniques you could put in place and build a vocabulary review into each lesson. Which of the activities introduced in this chapter would you select? Why? SIOP Lesson Plan Design a SIOP lesson plan. On Appendix B you will find four different SIOP Lesson Plan Templates. You must use one of these templates to design your lesson plan as this format will guarantee that you have addressed all the SIOP components. Post your SIOP Lesson Plan here.
