Maltreatment/ Ashford Univ EDU644 Child & Family Welfare
Question Description
Psycho-historian Lloyd De Mause said, “The history of childhood is a nightmare from which we have only recently begun to awake. The further back in history one goes, the lower the level of child care and the more likely children are to be killed, abandoned, beaten, terrorized and abused” (Child Maltreatment, 2012, National Association of Counsel for Children). While the history of maltreatment led to protection laws currently in place, often the laws or systems put in place to protect children fail. The Child Maltreatment-National Association website (http://www.naccchildlaw.org/?page=childmaltreatment) provides statistics for incidence of child maltreatment. After reviewing the site, offer an explanation for the number of children who are still maltreated. Provide an example of current day child maltreatment that was not prevented or addressed by the policies in place. What ideas do you have to improve policies or procedures? Would you focus on prevention? How?
