Quo tendimus? (Where are we going? - Latin, ref. Google
Translate)

There are two current streams of research that can be exciting or terrifying
depending on your perspective. One is genetics and I know little about it. The
other is robotics. It is of considerable interest to me and is related to our
class. I can visualize multiple chapters on intelligent systems appearing in the
book by 2024.

In Chapter 6 you read about auction trading on the Internet. Agents are
software robots on the Internet. I have several research papers on intelligent
agents doing the auction trading. This work began with research grants from NASA
to develop rules of engagement in Intelligent Agent Communities. The famous
science fiction writer Isaac Asimov wrote the three rules of robotics, but
Asimov's laws only stop robots from (1) hurting people, (2) hurting other
robots, and (3) hurting themselves. They say nothing about being and working
together. This can become an important question as robotic systems become more
and more intelligent to the point where the system can learn by itself without
being programmed.

Perhaps we have not come to that point yet. You can get an intelligent robot
called Roomba to vacuum your room. If you get two Roombas to vacuum two rooms
will they knock each other out? According to Hyundai the robots even fix each
other when something goes wrong in their robotic automobile assembly plant in
the US.

You are wondering how relevant this is. In Chapter 8 you read about Web 3.0
being intelligent. Search engines will use context and must be having a high
level of artificial intelligence. Suppose you make a query on Google. Bing
becomes jealous and picks a fight with Google. The two fight and your computer
burns. You see why rules need to be proactive. A person cannot pick a fight with
another on the road and kill that person. At present there are no restrictions
on intelligent systems.

Discuss this whole issue of intelligence and the future.
