UNEMPLOYMENT ON THE RISE
2
Since the year 2000 the amount of Americans that are at working age has grown to 27
million (theeconomiccollapseblog.com). Never include website addresses in the text. Refer to the
APA manual for proper in-text citation formatting. Why has this number increased so much in
such a short time? There are many factors that contribute to this enormous figure. One of the
main causes of unemployment is the competition in the job market and our currently
overpopulated nation. There are many highly qualified applicants for jobs with great benefits and
a great salary but one big issue; there are not enough of these positions for every qualified
applicant. Unemployment has substantial effects on different areas in our lives. These effects can
be seen across the nation and even across the globe.
A normal life, decent income, and just having the feeling of being “settled in” and
successful is a very hard task that many Americans try to achieve across the nation. I believe
(Delete this phrase “I believe,” because it increases the appearance of bias) this world has met its
capacity of people and the workforce may not be able to supply everybody with a job. We can
see today how good paying jobs rely heavily on education and experience to be able to land just
an interview with no promises of actually attaining placement within the company or within this
economy. The times of meeting the minimum requirements for a job are long gone and it looks
like it will not come back.
Being unemployed affects everybody, not just the people that do not have a job but also
the people currently in the workforce. Let’s talk about how unemployment affects the people that
do not have jobs first. I have yet to meet a person that is content on being jobless. Many people
have commitments to their salary or pay (credit cards, mortgages, and different types of loans).
domino effect starts when a person loses his job and cannot recover fast enough to get back into

the workforce. Anger, anxiety, stress, sadness, confusion, and maybe even desperation occur in
the human body and starts breaking that person down emotionally.
Men and women who are unemployed for a long period of time tend to suffer more of
physical and emotional disturbances in their lives (sciencedaily.com). Going through a period in
your life where you suffer from loss of income, loss of social contacts in the workplace, and
failure to regain employment once again, may trigger emotional and physical changes in your
life that may be hard to deal with without the proper care. I believe that the longer you don’t
have a job the more stress starts to develop; and with more unneeded stress that your body starts
accumulating, the more of a risk you run in developing functional impairments within your brain
like sleep disorders, anxiety disorders and maybe go into substance
abuse(www.sciencedaily.com). See APA manual for correct in-text citation formatting.
Losing your job is hard on the body and mind. Don’t address the reader by using the
second person (you, your, yourself, yourselves). You could say instead, for example, “Losing
one’s job is hard on the body and mind.” Make this change throughout your essay where you’ve
used the second person. Being unemployed for a long time brings about significant wear and tear
on your body parts; one of them mainly your heart. The Archives of Internal Medicine published
a report on people that have suffered repeated job loss and the effects of on them. The stress of
losing your job and facing the fact the you might not be able to pay your bills because of loss of
income and job security is as damaging to your heart as a person that smokes and you may even
develop high blood pressure, diabetes, and many more diseases if continued unemployment is
present in your life (healthland.time.com). (See APA manual)

Marriages and family life can be affected in a very negative way if the person that lost the
job is the provider for the family. The development of children within the person or family that
has lost their job can be negatively affected. Poor academic performance may start happening.
The child may go into depression because his mom or dad is not working. These thoughts can
bring out behavior issues and physiological effects within the child that parents may or may not
be able to address because may be too busy trying to get back on the job market. Parents may
not have the medical assistance they need for their children because of loss of income and
employment benefits such as medical insurance that could help address these problems.
Unemployment hurts the economy in several ways. The more people that are unemployed
the more money the government has to shell out in unemployment benefits. An unemployed
person’s spending power also decreases because they might want to save their money instead of
spending it on stuff they do not actually need thus hurting the economy and the rotation of
money throughout the country. Tax paying citizens become discontent and frustrated because
taxes might be raised to equalize the inflation of costs and maintenance to the country. Employed
personnel may also decrease in job performance if they see a fellow co-worker become
terminated or laid off bringing anguish and despair to the work place.
A loss in tax revenue within a state will bring with it higher tax rate and maybe a cut back
in salary for employed people or for people negotiating a salary. Unemployment departments
become overwhelmed with the demand for help. Some states like Texas and Florida that do not
have an income tax might suffer more because unemployment monetary benefits might not be
taxed by that state and drains an economy that is already hurting. With the amount of people that
are unemployed and not able to spend the money to buy in the current markets, companies are
forced to make fewer items for purchase because they will be supplying to a lesser demand. If
UNEMPLOYMENT ON THE RISE

companies make less items because of the lesser demand to sell those items; companies then will
have to do cutbacks within their companies so they can meet those demands and bring in a profit
or at least break even with their expenditures. Those cutbacks that the companies will do will
more than likely be employees and other sorts of unnecessary expenditures companies have. The
less income a company brings the more it will hurt the economy because they will pay less taxes.
It looks to me this is a pretty vicious cycle with no end in sight.
Being jobless doesn’t just affect the families, the economy, or communities itself. It
affects everybody. This is a world problem caused by major overspending within our
governments, poor financial planning, credit line upon credit line of debt, and just plain
carelessness in a very long term period. We have seen people lose their houses, divorces,
suicides, drug abuse, and generations of children not being raised the right way because people
could not embraced that American dream and families are falling apart left and right because of
our economic issues. Good health is slowly declining and we are rapidly depleting our earth’s
natural resources with our current situation of over population.
Children are not being raised with the knowledge of how much money is actually is
worth, how hard it is to get, and how frivolous spending does not help anybody. We as a nation
have sunken ourselves into a hole that we may not be able to dig our way out. Companies are
suffering and they need the manpower but they do not have the income to hire more people
causing burnouts within their employees. There has got to be a way we can change this around
and make everything normal, where money flows in and out with no difficulty and people do not
have the feeling of hopelessness.

The reference list looks great, except the hanging indent is backwards of what it should be. When
a citation on a reference list runs longer than one line of text, the second+ lines should be
indented, but not the first. (Basically, the opposite of a paragraph.) Demonstration videos exist
on Youtube.com to show how to make this change, and I also review it in one of my formatting
videos in the Course Media Gallery.
