Make-Up Quiz Assignment: You can perform this assignment twice throughout the term to replace a quiz score – use it wisely. It will automatically be applied to your current lowest quiz score at the time of submission. The assignment will consist of a 2 – 5 page paper, only loose APA requirements are necessary (times new roman, 12pt font, double spaced, references cited). You do not need a cover page, however you should definitely proof read for spelling and grammar. The object of the assignment is to research a mathematician, engineer, or scientist (alive or dead) and give us a brief bio and describe some of their more meaningful contributions to their field. Wikipedia is a good starting point but should not be used as a final reference. If you are looking for technical material, try using Google scholar for your searches (sometimes it can be too technical though). Likewise, the college’s databases are a great place to look. Please feel free to include images/graphs/charts or any relavant material you find online. I enjoy a good visual. I will create a discussion forum for these to be submitted. I would like you to post in the discussion with a very brief (2-3 sentences) description of your paper, and then add your paper as an attachment. That way we can all enjoy the fruits of your labor and maybe even learn a thing or two about a thing or two. I will check the discussion weekly for your submissions (probably a Wednesday or Thursday). Below are a list of a few examples of names if you are unsure where to start. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Kurt Godel Niels Abel Alan Turing Nikola Tesla James Clerk Maxwell Archimedes Hypatia Jane Goodall Marie Currie Albert Einstein Maxwell Planck Rosalind Franklin Jocelyn Burnell Chien-Shiung Wu Bertrand Russel Leonard Euler Rene Descartes Pierre Fermat Evariste Galois For many of these individuals, the story of their deaths is as interesting as the story of their lives. Similarly, many of them were not famous until after their deaths when their work was validated. Feel free to choose from this list or to make your own choice. You may also select a specific topic (decoding the human genome, constructing the first atom bomb, etc.) that you find interesting and regale us with that story. Please feel free to email me with any questions. I look forward to reading your submissions. Grading Criteria 70% - Coverage of Topic – This includes the individuals bio (or history of the topic if you choose that route), and a description of their work (or the development of the theory/invention). This should be your main focus while undertaking this project. 20% - Spelling and grammar. You’re in college. Proofread. Ask someone else to proofread if you’re not confident. 10% - Reference – You should be using multiple outside sources to find material. I’m not so concerned with the format of your references. As long as you are providing us with the source of your information and we’re able to find it on our own based on your references, you’re good. 10% - Presentation – This includes formatting properly (see the second paragraph), readability of your paper (I want to be able to follow what you are saying), and the inclusion of any graphics.
