Explanation & Answer

First add the fractions of x on the left side by getting a common denominator.

3/5=12/20 and 1/4=5/20 so

12x/20 - 5x/20 + 14 = 7x/10 then subtract

7x/20 + 14 = 7x/10 then subtract 14 from both sides and subtract 7x/10 from both sides

7x/20 - 7x/10 = -14

7/10 = 14/20 which you can prove by multiplying 7/10 by 2/2, and 2/2 is really just 1 and anything times 1 is itself. So

7x/20 -14x/20 = -14

-7x/20 = -14

then multiply both sides by -20/7 to isolate the x and get

x = 40
