Question Description

The Conowingo Dam is the southernmost dam on the Susquehanna River,

and is a critical flood control project and electric power generator. Water flow

through the dam’s turbines and flood control gates is roughly approximated by

the following equation:

Discharge (gallons / second) = 1,500 + 350,000 (# of inches of rain received in

Harrisburg, PA in the prior 30 days)

a) The lowest recorded discharge flow through the dam occurred in 1969

after a period of drought where there was no rain in the previous 30

days (and almost none the previous 60 days). What was the flow rate

through the dam at that time in gallons/second?
