Writing Assignment This writing project is intended to help you explore how scholars think. The thinking process is as important as its contents. Your task is to complete the following process: Step 1: Choose an artifact Select one cultural artifact: - that can be studied in an academic context - that can teach us something significant about the context we are studying (e.g. choose a painting, a song, a poem, a building, a film, a television program, etc.) - that is not a person, a theory, or an item whose significance is too broad (such as the computer) - that has been created during the years 1900 - 2008 You may choose something featured in Fiero’s Humanistic Tradition (course textbook) with the following exceptions: You may not choose Picasso’s Les Demoiselles D’Avignon, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Kandinsky’s Panel for Edwin Campbell #1, anything from Proust or Kafka, or Dali’s The Persistence of Memory. Your choice of artifact must be submitted in writing for approval in your tutorial Sept. 22-24. In your submission, write in complete sentences the name of your choice, the creator, its approximate date of creation, its country of origin, and two of its descriptive features. You must also find a passage from Fiero’s Humanistic Tradition that addresses some aspect of your artifact (time period, context, or genre). All of this information should be submitted in a paragraph including the page number from Fiero’s Humanistic Tradition. ONE PAGE Step 2: Analyze the artifact’s features and context Analyze the features of the artifact. If it is a painting, for example, what exactly is the style it is painted in? What precise features distinguish that style? Note: This step is the pre-writing part of this process. Do research about that artifact’s context. - Describe the social, political, and economic conditions of the time. - Discover facts about similar artifacts that came before the one you are examining. - What influences shaped the artifact? - How exactly was the work different from earlier works? - Research the person or people who produced it, and the responses the world received when it first appeared. - What contribution did the artifact make? - How did other, later work copy its features? In this assignment, you are asked to further investigate you artifact of choice through preliminary research. After researching your artifact, you are required to provide a half a page singe-spaced analysis of your artifact. Each analysis will be different depending on the artifact itself and your own opinions on what should be examined. However, we have provided you with some start up questions that should help you begin you analysis. ✓ Explore the social, political and economic condition of the time ✓ Explore the artifact creator’s background/ approach/ ideology and how this influences their work ✓ Describe similar artifacts at the time,. How are they similar to this one? How do they differ? ✓ How did the artifact creator contribute to his/her field? Did she/he contribute to other fields as well? ✓ How was other/future generations influence by the artifact creator and/or the artifact itself Note: These questions are intended as guidelines for your thinking. You don’t have to answer all of them systematically. You do have to think about waht was most important about the artifact - the way it was made, the statement it made, and the influence it had on others. Follow the evidence. ONE PAGES Step 3: Compose an analysis and annotated bibliography Your research on the artifact’s context should be submitted as a one-page analysis and an annotated bibliography. Each bibliographic entry must have at least two descriptive sentences attached to it. Your bibliography should have the following: - at least one primary source artifact - at least two secondary source books - at least two secondary source journal articles - NO MORE THAN ONE WEBSITE. Do not include general websites such as Wikipedia. - All sources must be properly paraphrased or quoted using APA format Your written analysis of the artifact’s features and the annotated bibliography are due in your tutorial Oct. 20-22. In addition to an analysis, you are asked to provide an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography describes the sources listed in a few sentence. For this assignment, you are asked to provide one primary source (the artifact), two books and journal articles. There should be a total of five sources listed in your annotated bibliography. Each source’s description should be two sentences in length. The annotated bibliography must be cited in APA format. We have provided you with three examples to help guide you through the process. Each example is a different type of source. The first is a primary document, the second is a book, and the third is a journey article. One page p.s this is all one assignment but she want us to do it one step at a time.
