Directions for paper for History or Art undergraduate credit Basic specifications: • The undergraduate History paper for “Virginia asocial Cultural History” is to be 8 -10 pages – not counting title page, and endnote page if you use endnotes rather than footnotes, the “Works Consulted and Cited” page, and any addenda, images, etc. • A minimum of 8 research sources, of which at least three shall be primary sources, must be use in preparing the paper. No more than two on-line sources may be used. Be careful in using websites and internet sources. Evaluate them and be sure they are scholarly. Under no circumstances may Wikipedia be used as a source, nor may general encyclopedias or dictionaries. Encyclopedias, etc. can be useful as general background information, and may make up part of a “working bibliography” for your own use, and may be included in a “Works Consulted and Cited” for the paper, but will not be counted as part of the required sources for the paper. No sources assigned for class may be used as part of the eight required sources, although they may be used as general information. • • • • • For the paper there shall be an annotated bibliography. (Annotations may be brief.) All written materials submitted shall be typed, double-spaced. Develop a narrow and well-focused topic. Develop a strong, clearly defined thesis. Your paper should be more than a report in which you offer a body of information and your synthesis of that information. It should include not only that, but also your own analysis of material through which you support the thesis you develop. • The thesis and a working bibliography are due no later than Nov. 11. For a good paper: • • • • • • • • • A strong, clearly focused thesis. Well-chosen research materials drawn from a variety of sources. Research that at the least meets minimum “specs.” Well-organized and well-written support of the thesis based on research and your own analysis and synthesis of research and reading. Good synthesis of materials. Good chronology. Accuracy of facts. Critical thinking is evident. Originality of thought. • • • • • Good formal writing. Good organization of material. A clear conclusion that brings closure to your thesis and its support and that does not introduce any new ideas or material. Assigned length met. Documentation correct as to content and style. • Paper turned in on time: Nov. 25th if you want it back before the end of the semester. Dec. 2 is the deadline.
