Task

A.  Complete each of the assessments listed below with a first, second, or third grade elementary-aged child. 

Note: BASP majors must complete this activity with an elementary or secondary student identified as having exceptional learning needs in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Note: Make certain you obtain permission to administer this assessment from the parent or guardian of the child you will be assessing.

Note: The reading assessments you complete for this task are meant to be conducted in two or three sittings with the child, and the “Reading Interest Inventory” and the “Informal Reading Inventory Teacher Form” are meant to be conducted in one session if you choose. You will then use what you learned from these two assessments to select appropriate reading material for the Reading Running Record Assessment and “Reading Running Record Timed Word Count and Fluency.”

1.Complete the attached “Reading Interest Inventory Grades 1–3” based on the child’s responses.  

a.  Summarize your results on the attached “Reading Summary Report” in the appropriate section.  

2.  Complete the attached “Reading Passage Teacher Form” based on the child’s reading.

a.  Summarize your results on the attached “Reading Summary Report” in the appropriate section.

3.  Complete the attached “Informal Reading Inventory Teacher Form” based on the child’s reading.

a.  Summarize your results on the attached “Reading Summary Report” in the appropriate section.

4.  Complete the Reading Running Record Assessment (using the attached “Miscue Analysis Symbols”) with the selected child using a text of your choice. (After administering the Reading Running Record Assessment, have the child continue reading for exactly oneminute.)

a.  Summarize your results on the attached “Reading Summary Report” in the appropriate section.

•  Include in your summary the information from the fluency indicators on the Informal Reading Inventory together with the timed word count that followed the Reading Running Record Assessment. 

b.  Calculate the fluency score using the attached “Running Record Timed Word Count and Fluency.”

1.  Summarize your results on the attached “Reading Summary Report” in the appropriate section.

Note: Select an appropriate text for the child to read in the “Reading Running Record Timed Word Count and Fluency” and fluency assessments based on the results of the informal reading inventory forms. Enter the text of the reading passage into the Reading Running Running Record Timed Word Count and Fluency" prior to administering the assessment.

B.Complete the following sections of the attached “Reading Summary Report” after reviewing the results of the reading assessments:

•  Reading Strengths

•  Reading Needs

•  Instructional Recommendations

Note: Submit the “Reading Summary Report” and all forms used to document and record the assessments. You may submit electronic forms or scan your forms with handwritten notations. 

C.  When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
