Description
In 1985 gas cost 211.9 per gallon, and 17.64 to fill the entire tank. In 2000 gas cost 273.1 how much would it cost to fill the same tank, but in the year 2000?
Explanation & Answer
I am assuming the cost of the gas is given in cents. Tank capacity = 17.64/ 2.119 = 8.32 gal
The problem is about proportion.
Let x be the cost of gas
So 273.1/ 211.9 = x / 273.1 Therefore by cross multiplying we get 211.9 x = 273.1 x 273.1
x = 273.1 x 273.1 /211.9
x = 351.98
Cost to fill the tank = 3.5198 x 8.32 = $ 29.28
Answer : $ 29.28
