Manikanta-GDSS called as group decision support system is a system that is computer
based which helps in enhancing problems that may be structured or unstructured which is done
by a group of decision makers. GDSS goals mainly help in development of productivity of the
meetings held for decision-making by the process of speeding up the process and to increase the
quality of the decision-making process.
The goal itself states that the collaboration and decision making in groups can be done
and the focus is on elimination or reduction of some losses. The primary goal is to help in
supporting the process of group decision-makers by help in automation of their subprocesses like
brainstorming and through that process using the tools of information technology. The next focus
is to design an information system specifically for decision-making processes and not just a
configuration of already existing system components. The designed information system can be
made to address a specific type of problem or a variety of group-level organizational decisions.
The next capability of GDSS is to generate ideas, conflict resolution, freedom to express
thoughts. There are built-in mechanisms in this process to discourage the negative behaviors of
the group that are being developed like destructive conflict, miscommunication, and groupthink.
GDSS supports the decision-making process in a lot of ways. GDSS helps in structuring
the meeting planning process which helps in keeping track of the meeting, where some
applications permit the group decision-makers to help use in. techniques that are unstructured
and helps support of parallel processing of information. GDSS offers rapid and easy access to
external and stored information needed for decision making. This also allows asynchronous
discussion. Larger group meeting that was unmanageable in the past is made possible in the
recent times using GDSS. There are a lot of advantages of larger group meetings as well which
may include complete information, knowledge, and skills. There are two options for deploying
GDSS technology. They are a special-purpose decision room and the other one is Internet-based
groupware with client programs running wherever the group members are. (Sharda et al., 2020)
Manasa-A group decision support system (GDSS) is an interactive computer-based system that
facilitates the solution of semi-structured or unstructured problems by a group of decision
makers (Sharda, Delen, & Turban, 2020). GDSS helps to improve the decision-making meetings
and speeds up the process and also increases the quality of the decisions. Initial implementation
of GDSS was to support face-to-face meetings and in today’s world its support is over the web to
GDSS helps improve the decision-making process in various ways. The following are the
advantages of GDSS that can increase and improve the collaboration and decision making
Brainstorming is one of the key advantages of GDSS as it supports parallel processing of
information and ideas.
Anonymity is other key feature which helps individuals who are shy to voice out their opinion
that leads to better decisions and increased participation.
It helps in allowing larger groups to participate with more knowledge, information and skills
thereby eliminating irrelevant discussions and wastage of time.
It lets individuals be more focused and have clear, concrete and concentrated discussions.
It also provides a structured planning process to ensure the group is on track without any
In the current Web and Virtual meetings; it lets us to record all the information that’s presented
in the meeting so that it can be used at a later point of time for reference.
GDSS has lot of success stories and is obviously beneficial for the organizations as it also
incorporates Artificial Intelligence and helps better decision making.
