Question Description

1) READ through the handouts listed here (and they are also available in the Essay #2 Module):

2) READ one of the Sample Essays in the E2 Module

3) By the due date listed on this Discussion Link, POST your deconstructed version of the sample essay either by uploading a COMPLETELY FILLED IN Comparison Contrast Grid or by simply listing the elements of the Comparison/Contrast essay in an outline form (i.e. two subjects, supporting points, description of evidence, etc.).

4) ALSO, include in your post the ANSWERS to the following questions based on the SAMPLE ESSAY you have chosen:

1. What is the author's thesis (may be implicit, i.e. not explicitly stated). Does the essay’s thesis control the entire essay (author’s opinion reiterated in topic sentences, etc.)? If not, note the paragraphs or ideas that do not fully reinforce and support the thesis.

2. Do the Author’s points of comparison and contrast actually support or illustrate his/her thesis (aka opinion)? Cite an example from the essay.

3. Is the material organized into the best pattern for the subject matter? If the essay is developed in the Point-By-Point pattern, are there enough transition words used to avoid the see-saw effect? If the essay is developed in the Subject-by-Subject pattern (also known as the Block pattern), are there enough transition devices and references connecting the two subjects to avoid the split-essay problem? If not, explain.

4. What are the author's main points of support? Are both subjects given balanced treatment within the context of the author’s main points? If not, point out the problem areas.

5. Are both subjects developed in enough specific detail so that the reader clearly understands the comparison or contrast? Did the Author SHOW more than just TELL in this essay? If not, where might more detail be added?
