Description
Relate how behavioral norms, attitudes, and values define a country’s culture.
Explanation & Answer
Culture is defined as the norms, attitudes, and values of a society or a country. A country's culture is defined by the social norms that are embraced by people in the country. Social norms establish the types of behaviors, attitudes, and values the people will display. For example in a democratic society the people expect to be treated fairly and to be afforded certain freedoms. These rights result in a certain attitude by the people in the country and establish a set of beliefs that become a part of the norms that are established. The attitudes and values of people in society will also shape the behaviors displayed. For example in a society where men are considered dominant over women, the behaviors and attitudes displayed would embrace this ideal by ensuring men get the better jobs and the better education. Culture is shaped by the behavioral norms, attitudes, and values displayed by the people as a whole (Jervis, 2006). Cultures vary from country to country because the people and their belief system vary from country to country. Religion can heavily influence the behavior and attitudes displayed by people in society but so can tradition and normative beliefs. A country is defined by its culture which develops from the behaviors, attitudes, and values of the people.
