Economics Discussion 4
Rent control is an example of a price ceiling. Price ceilings keep prices low for consumers. We can clearly see that sellers (landlords in this case) are worse off. Consider if there is an argument to be made that consumers are worse off, too.
a) After watching the Seinfeld video clip, discuss how some consumers are made better off and some are not in a rent-control situation.b) What kinds of rationing mechanisms would develop to help allocate the few apartments that are available?c) In your opinion, do the benefits of rent control outweigh the costs? When you answer the discussion question make sure you bring the supply and demand for apartments into the rent control discussion. There are still cities that have rent control laws, New York City being the biggest. You have to answer all three parts of the question to maximize your grade. You should label each part as a paragraph as was required in prior discussion questions. For paragraph a), talk about the consumers who are lucky enough to get rent controlled apartments and those that are not. Discuss the effects of rent control on the apartment market. For paragraph b), discuss what other methods would be used to allocate rent controlled apartments beside the lower price for those apartments. For paragraph c), do a cost/benefit analysis of the good and the bad of rent control that takes into account the consumer's and supplier's costs/benefits. 500-words, APA formatting.I attached the audio transcript of this film clip.
