Machine Design Project Spring 2020 Here is a description of the project due on May 5th, 2020 The project is to design a spreadsheet using Excel to automate the process of designing a spur gear. You may use the example of page 359 in our textbook. In general, you will have Excel spreadsheet cells that are input cells where the program user can input numerical values for things such as motor horsepower, input rpm, desired output rpm, your chosen diametral pitch for your pinion and gear, and all the “K” coefficients such as overload factor, rim thickness factor, dynamic factor, size factor, etc. You will also inmput the number of pinion teeth (value to start with to insure no interference). Your program will calculate the number of gear teeth then you must input the actual number of gear teeth (whole number closest to calculated number). You will also have to input values such as face width (within guidelines), Elastic coefficient (based on gear and pinion materials), gear quality number (not part of a calculation, just an informational note), Geometry factors for the gear and pinion (will be different) for bending and compressive (hertz) stresses. You should note items that you used to determine factors from graphs such as type of gear housing, pinion proportioning factor, mesh alignment factor etc. This is important so that anyone can pick up your program and determine what was used to assign values to variables. You will also input desired reliability factors, factors of safety, etc. You will input a design life and calculate number of cycles. Your program will then calculate bending stress cycle factors and pitting stress cycle factors. You will have formula cells that will house the formulas that calculate variables using the values from your input cells. Finally your program will calculate your bending stress number and pitting stress number to be used in choosing a material. Finally you should have a cell where your user can put in his chosen material based on those numbers. Annotate your program very well so that anyone familiar with spur gear design can easily use it to run through the numbers and design a gear and pinion You will submit your project by May 5th electronically.
