Question Description

Keep these general guidelines in mind:

    • Students will choose one book from the following on which their term paper will be based:
    • Plimpton, G. (1966). Paper lion. New York, NW: Harper & Row.
    • Buford, B. (1990). Among the thugs. London, England: Harvill Secker.
    • Beard, A., & Paley, R. (2012). In the water they can’t see you cry: A memoir. New York, NW: Simon & Schuster
    • Robinson, J. (2003). I never had it made: An autobiography. New York, NY: Ecco Press.
  • Students will identify a topic directly related to the book chosen (i.e. violence to self, social learning theory, etc.)
    • Use examples and references for support and validation. Let us know where you retrieved these sources.
  • Include background information citing news articles/websites/peer-reviewed academic journals in APA format (this includes title page, running head, and references)
    • Include a minimum of 4 peer-reviewed references
  • Papers are to be a minimum of 3 FULL pages in length (excluding title page & references)
    • 1 page must be a synopsis of the book. This report will convey key themes, characters, and plot.
    • 1 page must elaborate on a topic chosen from the textbook which directly correlates to a theme present in the chosen novel.
    • 1 page must serve as a synthesis of these key themes/theories/ideas.

    Exemplary
    Student displays a clear understanding of concepts constructs chosen for paper. There are no irrelevant comments and correct information is provided that back up claims.
    20.0 pts
    Competent
    Student shows a clear understanding of the main points of the concepts relevant to the paper. No more than 2 irrelevant comments related to synthesis of constructs and novel.
    10.0 pts
    Beginning
    Response generally mentions a construct but fails to relate to novel. Argument lacks details and there are more than 2 irrelevant comments/statements present.
    0.0 pts
    Unsatisfactory
    Student fails to synthesize theory or concept from the textbook in a relevant way with themes present in the novel.
    30.0 pts

    Exemplary
    Student displays a clear, concise, and accurate depiction of the novel. Includes key themes, characters, and plot.
    20.0 pts
    Competent

    Beginning
    Student’s summary of the novel fails to dictate and convey key themes, characters, or plot.
    0.0 pts
    Unsatisfactory
    The student does not summarize novel by including any themes, characters, or plotlines.
    30.0 pts

    10.0 pts
    Exemplary
    Student adheres to all written instructions including page length, book choice, title page, and a minimum of 4 references
    7.0 pts
    Competent
    Student adheres to most of written instructions but does not complete assignment as instructed.
    3.0 pts
    Beginning
    Student’s paper lacks at least two of the following guidelines: page length, 4 peer-reviewed sources, title page and/or references.
    0.0 pts
    Unsatisfactory
    Student does not adhere to written guidelines.
    10.0 pts

    5.0 pts
    Exemplary
    Student sites all sources in correct APA-6 format both in-text and in references.
    4.0 pts
    Competent
    Student’s paper contains no more than 1 error in APA format.

    Unsatisfactory
    Student’s paper contains in excess of 2 errors in APA format, fails to cite source either in-text or in references.
    5.0 pts
    Total Points: 75.0
