background to own a home and have a place they can really call their own. Recent statistics are
however giving a different and wanting image of the exact state of homelessness in the United
States. As students are constantly being enlightened and coming into terms with lack of jobs,
hunger and the skyrocketing costs of living, homelessness is the next big thing that students are
globally coming into terms with and the understanding of homelessness is imperative for any
student and citizen of any particular country. In this paper, I wish to explore homelessness in the
United States beginning with an overview of some statistics and taking a keen concern on the
United States state of homelessness. The paper will explore the various states and regions within
the country where homelessness is experienced to a larger percentage and also go forward to
explore the reasons why homelessness has grown so rampant in the recent day and then come to
a point of conclusion regarding what exactly the state is and recommendations for possible
solutions to the recent pandemic.
Statistics
In the statistics released just last year, it came out that in the United States:
•
•
•
13.2% of the entire United States population is under the poverty level.
1 out of 7 citizens of the United States is at risk of suffering from hunger.
3.5 million people in United States are forced to sleep under bridges, parks and at shelter
of cars.
This really portrays the actual situation that United States is under as far as the problem and
rather pandemic of homelessness is concerned.

Spending Priorities and Hunger
Some of the basic hypothesis that have and can be drawn from the current state of economy in
regards to regarding the increase in costs of living, increased unemployment levels as well as
low- wage jobs show that the highest risk that Americans are faced with are inclined towards
hunger. This is because as it was identified, families would and will in most cases often opt to
pay for their fixed liabilities such as rent and in such cases, what happens is that money devoted
for food will be the first target for sacrificed to housing. What is even rather unfortunate in all
this scenario is that these problems are and will continue to be on the rise if our society does not
identify and rather find a systematic way of addressing this problems?
Homelessness Facts
Any person from any walk of life can fall homeless at a particular point in time. However there
is always a reason that can be justified and explained for being homeless. In the United States as
it is, there are around 3.5 million people who are homeless or rather have experienced
homelessness in the last one year. A percentage of around 35% of those who have experienced
this homelessness are families and this is the greatest growing segment of the homeless. Of this
percentage, 23% are part of the United States military veterans, 25% are children who are under
the age of 18 years, and finally 30% have in certain circumstances experienced domestic
violence. For the urban communities it is believed that the average time people experience
homelessness is approximately eight months. Of all the homeless population, it has also been
identified that 20-25% suffer from mental illness which heightens the effect of homelessness.
Reasons for Homelessness
There are several problems and reasons associated with for homelessness but the basic reason
that it all narrows down to is that homelessness is an economic problem. However, there are
some other reasons that are associated with homelessness which include social and political
factors.
Lack of Federal Funds
The problem of homelessness exploded in United States in the 1980’s after the funds that were
meant for the mentally ill and the low income earners in the society and the money was
withdrawn and redirected to federal spending programs. The spending levels therefore went up
and this led to the effect of approximately 50% misappropriation and eventually, the United
States did a conclusive effect management and hence homelessness. The problem of
homelessness can be brought down to various specific terms and measures.
Lack of Affordable Housing
The lack of affordable housing in the United States is one of the main reason[s] why
homelessness is a rampant problem in the United States. There is a discrepancy that makes it
even harder for the citizens of United States to make ends meet when it comes to the issue of
housing. The discrepancy is experienced in the sense that there is an increase in the costs of

housing and the income levels of citizens and this makes it very hard for the citizens to manage
their expenses
Lack of Pay Increases
Since with the increase in the cost of housing, it ought to be accompanied by an equal increase in
the salary and wages that the citizens are getting and this is the same reason why housing is and
will continue to be a problem in the United States. In order to afford a two-bedroom apartment in
the United States, from the statistics that have been released by National low income housing
coalition, then the wage that would be required even for the cheapest state in the county is higher
than what the federal wage for the country has recommended.
Many of the people in the brackets of low and minimum wage level in the United States are
unable to afford food and shelter effectively. Over the past twenty five years, as more statistics
have revealed, there has been no consistency between wages in the United States with the
increase in costs of living and this makes it constantly harder for the low and minimum wage
earners to provide for themselves both food and shelter. In the real sense actually, in the United
States today the minimum wage has decreased in value by about 27% from the minimum wage
of 1968 due to issues relating to adjusting for inflation. This has made it constantly hard for the
low income earners and medium to afford a good housing for themselves and medical care.
High Medical Expenses
The issue of lack of affordable medical care is also a huge contributory factor to the United
States economic problem in the sense that health care and insurance has dramatically been on the
rise over the past years and recent statistics reveal that it has gone to the level of approximately
$8000/ Year. For the families that live in the low and medium income earning level then they
probably will not have or rather afford the cover and in the real sense the occurrence of a chronic
disease could and actually results to be financially devastating.
Political Factors
There have been cuts in the housing and social services programs in the United States and this
factor has been known and rather identified as a major contributory factor to the rise in
homelessness in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, the programs that had been put in
place for federal housing nearly eradicated housing in the United States but the slashing by half
of the funds that were being allocated for this project has since the 1980s started seeing a
constant increase of the homeless population of the United States.
Cuts to TANF: There have been programs that have been aimed and rather intended to help
reduce homelessness in the United States. Such programs include the Temporary Assistance for
Needy Families (TANF) which have in the recent years face challenges such as cuts in their
financial allocations and this can be termed as an outstanding factor that has led to the inability
and rather made it really hard to manage the exercise.
Increased Regulations: There are also some other regulations apart from the financial slashes
that have made the effectiveness of these organizations really wanting which include the factor

of being sanctioned, immigrant regulations, time limits and work requirements among other
factors have really and highly contributed to the aspect of being well adherent with the situation
as it is in the major hit areas. There is really a need to ensure and rather allocate a safety net for
the employees in such work departments and also ensure that there is a factor where such
employees are well considered and the ease of doing their work heightened.
Social and Medical Factors
It is definite that economy is a major factor that leads to or would most likely lead to
homelessness. However, the risk of homelessness is also heightened in the long term by issues
like drug addiction, mental illness or even alcoholism. Some of the statistics conducted in the
United States have revealed that about 25% of the homeless have suffered mental illness. And as
mentioned in this case, it is a double tragedy for those since as a result of being in the low
income earning bracket, then one suffers mental illness and then they do not have insurance
hence they do not receive treatment as would be required and rather necessary in such a
situation. Addiction to drugs and alcohol can and rather accounts for approximately 20% of the
homeless and again as mentioned, those are in the bracket where accessing good medical care to
them is not possible.
Conclusion
This paper has really and clearly highlighted all the possible scenarios and causes of
homelessness in the United States. We can however end homelessness in the United States. This
would be done by starting from the root cause of the problem, which is tackling the issue of
wage levels and also ensuring that there is affordable housing availed to the people. It is equally
important to improve the support services in the country such as TANF, health care and housing
vouchers and this will see the elimination of homelessness problem in the United States.
