JFKU Coefficient of Static Friction Physics Problems
Measure the coefficient of static friction between an object of your choosing and a flat surface such as a desktop, table, or wooden board. You'll need to know the mass of the object and to apply a known force parallel to the surface. One way to apply a force is by using a rope (run the rope horizontally over to a pulley and then hang a known mass off the edge of the table at the other end of the rope). Another way would be to incline the surface and use the parallel component of the object's weight to overcome the frictional force. Other techniques for applying and measuring forces are of course possible.Either way, measure the minimum force needed to start the object moving and compare this to the normal force to get the coefficient of friction. As with all experiments, pay close attention to uncertainties. Measure as carefully as possible and discuss how you arranged the apparatus to minimize experimental uncertainty.

Given what you read in this week's resources, with the benefit of hindsight, would you have implemented the One Child Policy? Why? What are the positives and negatives of pursuing such a policy?

Post 1:
China implemented the one child policy in order to slow it’s population growth. If parents were to have a second child they would be fined and the child could not be registered into the national household system. This meant that the child had no accused to things such as health care or edictaion. Their were some exceptions to the one child per household rule such as if a mother were to have twins then they wouldn’t be fined by the government. Some of the benefits this had for China was that the policy was able to control the population. I personally would have never implemented this policy because I think that it seems like something that is very controlling and takes away freedoms that people have. I belve that this policy is also inhuman because if someone were to have a second child that child wouldn’t even be seen as a citizen and would not have any benefits such as having access to school or health care. This seems very unfair for that child and they are being set up for failure by the government. Some of the positives that this brought to China was that they were able to control how much the population was growing. This would put a stop to them becoming overpopulated due to a large birth rate. I also think that another positive is that after the law was lifted it made people think twice about having more children due to the lack of affordable childcare, living cost, and long work hours. Some negives to this is that if someone were to accidentally have a second child then they would be fined by the government as well as the child wouldn’t have any benefits. Another negative is that this policy seemed very controling over people and they had no choice but to follow it.

Given what you read in this week's resources, with the benefit of hindsight, would you have implemented the One Child Policy? Why?
Given what the countries goals at that given time, morality aside, the one child policy was the right fit. From the point of view of the government, stabilizing the population and making it a somewhat fixed variable would be advantageous to centralized planning and long-term planning. That being said, it's not a policy that I would have implemented, mostly because it's to drastic of a measure for the goal. Incentivizing its citizens to more abroad is less drastic, and in theory easier to throttle as needed
What are the positives and negatives of pursuing such a policy?
From a nation-state point of view, the top priority is national security. The amount of military aged males is an import measure of how a country can project power and defend its borders. These numbers are for the most part can be measured by advisories and leveraged. Russia is having a problem with its limited population of military aged males now in its efforts in Ukraine (Peabody 2022). Depending on the starting demographics a policy that limits child births could be detrimental to this measurement. For China however, where males were preferred, this has gone the opposite direction, China now has the second largest population reaching military age in 2022 (Manpower Fit for Military Service (2022) 2022). This is a benefit for China now.
Another negative to a policy restricting childbirth is that it would distort the rest of the economy. The course material covered how the social safety net that helps the old and infirm now must rely on a smaller pool of people to support it therefore burdening the young and potentially exacerbating the situation.
The positive is that capital and investment can more efficiently be used as these large cohorts can be planned for similarly to how the US has the Baby Boomer generation.
