Chapter 11 Sports NutritionTopic 1The Gatorade Sports Science Institute publishes reports (not actual research articles) regarding research focused on nutrition and athletic outcomes. Keep in mind that these articles are not acceptable for your vitamin and mineral reports. I am not thrilled about the biased nature of this research but I want you to critically evaluate the studies in this section. Your assignment is to go to their website and find an article related to nutrition and athletic performance http://www.gssiweb.org/en/publications/all (Links to an external site.) Search Sports Science Exchange for possible topics or select the Sports Nutrition option and pick a topic. Report back to the class what you learned from your article including:What was being researched, how was the study designed, how many people participated in the study and what were the results of the study? You might also want to comment on limitations to the study and other thoughts you might have about what you read. Some of the reports will look at multiple studies and you can comment on that, as well.Make sure that you compare what you read in the report to what you have read in class or at another website. Lastly, comment on how this information might cause you to change the way that you are eating or what you might recommend to your friends who are athletes.Topic 2Interval or High Intensity training is being used to improve sports performance, improve body composition and maximize weight loss and fitness. Read the links below and then answer the following questions.http://www.metaboliceffect.com/hormonal-weight-loss/ (Links to an external site.)http://www.metaboliceffect.com/3-muscle-hormones-that-drive-the-metabolic-effect (Links to an external site.)/ (Links to an external site.)1. 1. What is hormonal weight loss? What hormones are involved?2 2. Compare and contrast high intensity exercise interval training with the traditional low intensity exercise recommendations. 3. What is EPOC? How does it affect the “Calorie burn”? 4. Do you have any experience with this type of exercise? Do you think you would recommend it for someone who is trying to lose weight?

Galileo Galilei
Galileo Galilei and Giordano Bruno were questioned for similar reasons. Galileo's trial ended with an abjuration. Bruno was declared a heretic, excommunicated, and burned at the stake. At his trial, Giordano listened to the verdict on his knees, then stood up and said: "Perhaps you, my judges, pronounce this sentence against me with greater fear than I receive it."Look for information about Galileo Galilei and Giordano Bruno and post your comments considering scientists' social and ethical responsibility. Below you can read Galileo's abjuration.-----------------------------------------------------------"I, Galileo, son of the late Vincenzo Galilei, Florentine, aged seventy years, arraigned personally before this tribunal, and kneeling before you, Most Eminent and Reverend Lord Cardinals, Inquisitors-General against heretical depravity throughout the entire Christian commonwealth, having before my eyes and touching with my hands, the Holy Gospels, swear that I have always believed, do believe, and by God's help will in the future believe, all that is held, preached, and taught by the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. But whereas -- after an injunction had been judicially intimated to me by this Holy Office, to the effect that I must altogether abandon the false opinion that the sun is the center of the world and immovable, and that the earth is not the center of the world, and moves, and that I must not hold, defend, or teach in any way whatsoever, verbally or in writing, the said false doctrine, and after it had been notified to me that the said doctrine was contrary to Holy Scripture -- I wrote and printed a book in which I discuss this new doctrine already condemned, and adduce arguments of great cogency in its favor, without presenting any solution of these, and for this reason I have been pronounced by the Holy Office to be vehemently suspected of heresy, that is to say, of having held and believed that the Sun is the center of the world and immovable, and that the earth is not the center and moves:
Therefore, desiring to remove from the minds of your Eminences, and of all faithful Christians, this vehement suspicion, justly conceived against me, with sincere heart and unfeigned faith I abjure, curse, and detest the aforesaid errors and heresies, and generally every other error, heresy, and sect whatsoever contrary to the said Holy Church, and I swear that in the future I will never again say or assert, verbally or in writing, anything that might furnish occasion for a similar suspicion regarding me; but that should I know any heretic, or person suspected of heresy, I will denounce him to this Holy Office, or to the Inquisitor or Ordinary of the place where I may be. Further, I swear and promise to fulfill and observe in their integrity all penances that have been, or that shall be, imposed upon me by this Holy Office. And, in the event of my contravening, (which God forbid) any of these my promises and oaths, I submit myself to all the pains and penalties imposed and promulgated in the sacred canons and other constitutions, general and particular, against such delinquents. So help me God, and these His Holy Gospels, which I touch with my hands.I, the said Galileo Galilei, have abjured, sworn, promised, and bound myself as above; and in witness of the truth thereof I have with my own hand subscribed the present document of my abjuration, and recited it word for word at Rome, in the Convent of Minerva, this twenty-second day of June, 1633.I, Galileo Galilei, have abjured as above with my own hand."

Impacts of a Borderless society
Question description
PLEASE USE THE TEMPLATE PROVIDED
You now live in a world where geographic boundaries cease to exist when it comes to goods, services, and even food. Most people think nothing of having freshly squeezed Florida orange juice or New Zealand kiwis for breakfast; even those who live in New York City with 10-inches of snow on the ground in the middle of January. In this age and time, everything and anything is available for consumption year-round at a local grocery store if you have the financial means. Although it may be an “unintended consequence,” these conveniences can come with potentially major ecological and economic impacts that are both positive and negative. For example, the coffee you drink may come from beans imported from Columbia, the sugar you use may come from India, or the steaks you sear on the grill may have come from Argentina. How much fuel was spent transporting these products across the ocean? Were any pesticides used? If so, was it done in a sustainable fashion? Were forests cleared to make room for grazing herds or larger agricultural fields? These are just a few of the many questions that should be considered when making selections at the grocery store.

For this Assignment, you will write an essay in which you analyze a meal you eat. Please be sure the meal has a minimum of four ingredients. For example:
1.Beef steak, baked potato, butter, and 2% milk.
2.Eggs scrambled with cheese, strawberries, and coffee.
3.Peanut butter, grape jam, white bread, and potato chips.
Address the following questions as you write your Assignment:
1.Meal analysis: Discuss the events and methods of production that allow major grocery chain stores to carry these items.1.Source identification: If you were to purchase each item at a major grocery chain store, where would these items be sourced? For example, where were the fruits or vegetables grown, or meats raised immediately prior to sale? Do not discuss the history or origin of the item (e.g., corn or maize originated in Mexico around 2500 BC.).
2.Farming and labor practices: What farming methods were likely used to grow these items, and how do these methods impact the environment around the farms as well as the employees who work within these establishments?
3.Packaging, processing and shipping: Were the items grown and shipped in from another country? What types of processing and packaging must take place in order for you to be able to purchase the product?
2.Economic and ecological analysis of food choice: Discuss the ecological and economic advantages and disadvantages of purchasing food items that are locally sourced versus those shipped from other areas of the country and from around the world. Use your assigned Reading for this unit, as well as supplemental sources, to explore the impacts our food purchases may have on the environment and economy and how these choices influence multiculturalism and diversity around the globe.
3.Applying food choice to Think Globally, Act Locally: The food choices people make have the potential to generate both local and global impacts and potentially serve as solutions to some of the challenges discussed so far. This concept can be summarized in the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally.” Discuss:◦How you would interpret this phrase based upon your meal analysis. For example, if you were to follow the suggestions shared within the articles provided above, where could you obtain the items (name specific local places within your community)? If a food item is not available locally, is there an alternative that you could use as a substitute?
◦How your individual actions can serve as a possible solution through the choices you make when planning and buying meals might change in the future.
◦How your choices, when combined with those of others, can have a global impact.
