"I am not a Know-Nothing. How could I be? How can any one who hates the oppression of
Negroes be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in evil appears to me
pretty rapid. As a nation we began by declaring "all men are created equal." We now
practically read it. "all men are created equal, except Negroes." When the Know-Nothings get
control, it will read "all men are created equal, except Negroes, and foreigners, and
Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they
make no pretense of loving liberty."

RETEACHING ACTIVITY
Chapter 14, Section 1
Directions: Read the letter below. Then find information in the letter to help you
answer the questions that follow. You will then learn how the Southern states
seceded from the Union and what were some of the advantages and disadvan-
tages of each side.
My dear sister Mary
With our beloved Virginia seceding from the Union, I
must abandon my plan to visit you in Illinois. News has
come in that Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina
have also seceded. You probably heard that hostilities
broke out at Charleston, South Carolina, when Con-
federate troops opened fire at Fort Sumter. The fort
symbolized Union power to the Souther states. The
Union forces, led by Major Robert Anderson, surren-
dered after thirty-four hours. This news united the North
against the South
I must also decide on which side to fight. Such a
choice is difficult when both causes have some merit
It seems as though the North has all of the advan-
tages. It has 4 million men of fighting age, nearly three
times as many as the South. In terms of manufacturing
and food production, the North produces four-fifths of
the nation's industrial goods and two-thirds of its food.
It also has an able President and many miles of railroad.
The South cannot afford to rest after its victory at Fort
Sumter. Already some southern plantations have
switched from growing cotton to producing food.
However, the general optimism here amazes me.
What the Confederacy lacks in numbers, it makes up for
in other ways. Confederate men are more able at han
dling guns and horses than their Northern counterparts.
Everyone here is confident, too, that "King Cotton" will
bring Britain to the aid of the South. Whether that will
happen remains to be seen. The Confederate President,
Jefferson Davis, certainly looks the part, but his ability
as a military strategist is untested. More than ever before,
the South needs a strong leader.
Mary news has just reached me that the capital of
the Confederacy is being moved to Richmond. I fear for
this beautiful city. I have leamed that Confederate troops
stopped the Union advance on Richmond at Bull Run.
It is impossible for me to leave. Though my heart is
with you and other Northemers on the issue of slavery,
my allegiance is to the land where we grew up.
Hopefully this conflict will end before more blood is
shod. Know that I think of you and your family. I look
forward to the day when we can once again be together.
Your loving brother,
John
