Description

Don't have to do this:

Like other types of tectonic plate boundaries, transform plate boundaries create unique metamorphic rocks. In this activity, you will model the action that creates metamorphic rocks at transform plate boundaries. All you will need is some modeling clay.

  1. Form a piece of clay into a rectangle about an inch thick and about 5 inches long.
  2. Lay the clay rectangle on a table and place your left hand on one end of it and your right hand on the other end of it.
  3. While pushing upward with your left hand, pull downward on the clay with your right hand so the two ends slide past each other like plates at a transform boundary. Do this until you have two separate pieces of clay.
Just Answer THIS: In your journal, record how the two pieces of clay look after the activity, especially the ends that slid against each other. Describe how this activity is similar to motion at a transform plate boundary and how you think metamorphic rocks are characterized at transform plate boundaries.
