That's a good question. But can reading a book really help you understand anything?
To answer your question, sociology is the study of society. So if reading a book about American society helps you somehow find a place in it that's significant to you, then it was probably because it helped you understand the society we live in.
However, society is just a concept. It's not a physical, tangible thing. It's just concepts. And it is completely relative. As far as your place goes.. you don't have one. There isn't a particular place for anyone anywhere. The only place you hold in a system is the one you choose to hold, or the one that you believe others think you should hold.
This is a really philosophical idea. So I can't get deep into it hear.
