MGT 3375: Global Human Resource Management Policies/Guidelines: Team-Based (TB) Assignments Overview of TB Assignments 1. Team-based (TB) assignments focus on answering questions related to the “Hotel Paris” case. There are two (2) TB assignments scheduled during the term. See the Course Schedule in the Syllabus and Assignments area in Blackboard for due dates. 2. Starting with Chapter 3, each chapter contains a segment of the “Hotel Paris” case that focuses on integrating, interpreting, and applying relevant chapter concepts to the case. Each segment of the case indicates options the hotel’s HR Director, Lisa Cruz, should consider in creating HRM policies and practices to produce the employee behaviors, competencies, and skills that Hotel Paris must utilize to achieve its strategic goals/outcomes. 3. An overall strategy map for the “Hotel Paris” case is provided in your textbook’s inside back cover. In addition, the following chapter resources are provided to assist with the strategic implications of the hotel’s HRM decisions: (1) Chapter-specific Hotel Paris strategy maps in the MyManagementLab (see Web site of textbook)); and (2) “Eiffel Tower” callouts in each chapter to draw your attention to case issues. 4. TB assignment questions for the “Hotel Paris” case (there are 2 assignments) will be provided. Policies: Preparing and Submitting TB Assignments 1. Policies to prepare and submit these assignments are outlined below.  Attachment 1 provides requirements to Submit each TB assignment.  Attachment 2 provides requirements to Prepare each TB assignment.  Attachment 3 provides the questions for TB Assignment #1. 2. This is a team-based (TB) assignment. The number of students per team depends on enrollment. Team assignments will be posted in Blackboard. 3. If a team member does not participate in completing the assignment or withdraws from the course, the remaining team members are responsible for completing the assignment by the due date. DO NOT include the name of a non-participating team member on the Title Page of a submitted TB assignment. 4. Individual submissions of the TB assignment will NOT be accepted or graded. 5. Opportunities to submit drafts for review prior to the due date are NOT allowed. If you have a specific question regarding these policies or the case questions, post your question in the Ask the Instructor forum in the DB. 6. As indicated in the syllabus, late TB assignments will not be accepted or graded. 1 Attachment 1: 1. Team Assignments: Blackboard. Submission of TB Each student will be assigned to a team. Team assignments will be posted in 2. Team Coordinator: Based on your team assignment (Team 1, 2, etc.), select a different team coordinator for each of the two (2) TB assignments. 3. Expectations: Each student must respond to all of the TB assignment questions independently.  This involves students completing each TB assignment individually.  Next, post your individual work for all assignment questions to your assigned Group Discussion Board. Individual student submissions may be in a draft format. Turnitin may be required for individual student submissions. You will be notified if this is required.  Then, discuss it within your group using email or your group’s Bb Group Discussion Board – NOT the Class Discussion Board.  Finally, create a group solution that brings all the parts together in a single, organized file, submitting it by the required due date and time.  The team coordinator will post the final TB paper in the Assignments area of Bb. Instructions to submit each TB assignment in the Assignments area of Bb will be provided.  REMINDER to Team Coordinator: Post only a single file for your team. 4. Rationale:  The above process must be used for all TB assignments. Do not “split” up the work.  Groups that split up the work (1) do not learn as much; (2) their work product invariably reflects the lack of benefits drawn from a real collaboration among informed team members; and (3) invariably, their grades are lower.  Periodically, I will review the Groups area to assess whether students are posting individual work for all assignment questions for each TB assignment. ▪ The team coordinator is to establish a clearly designated area for his/her team’s Group Discussion Board for each TB assignments. Use the following format: TB #1/#2: Individual Student Postings. I do not want to search all the postings/threads for this. ▪ If teams do not use the above procedure, 5+ points will be deducted from the team grade. 4. Logistics: The following procedure must be used to submit each TB assignment in Bb.  As previously indicated, the team coordinator must submit one paper per team.  Include a title page that contains the following information: ▪ Team # and names of all participating team members in alphabetical order. ▪ Please indicate the team coordinator for each TB assignment.  Use a running head format for each page: MGT 3375 – Team #.  The team coordinator must use the following file name format in submitting each TB assignment: TB1 or 2 - Team #-T114.  As previously indicated, instructions to submit each TB assignment in the Assignments area of Bb will be provided. 2 Attachment 2: Preparation of TB 1. Format. Reports must be professionally prepared, using APA guidelines for the format. the APA Guide for papers is posted in the Helpful Resources area of Bb. A link to  Provide specific support and adequate depth; use relevant examples from the case; be organized! At a minimum, three (3) specific examples/support statements should be provided per issue/question in your team’s responses.  Excellent communication skills, including proper grammar, correct spelling and punctuation, applicable section headings, page numbers, etc. are required.  Begin each question of the assignment questions on a new page. section headings, specifying a, b, etc., where indicated. Indicate question number,  Use Times New Roman, 12 pt. font.  Spacing: Single space within each bullet point; double space between bullet points.  Use of an outline/bulleted format is required in answering the questions. ▪ This page is an example of a bulleted format. ▪ Due to time constraints, it is essential you use this format for the TB assignments! to use this format will result in a deduction of 10+ points from your team’s grade. 2. Length: Failure Space guidelines - Maximum # of pages per will be provided for each TB assignment.  Page limits DO NOT INCLUDE prefatory pages (title page) and supplementary pages (exhibits, such as charts and tables), and references.  Exhibits: Use of professionally prepared exhibits (such as charts and tables) may be necessary, not only to comply with the length requirement, but also to enhance the succinct presentation of your team’s response. An exhibit must be “labeled” and briefly explained in the body of your team’s response - what is its relevance? An exhibit is typically one (1) page. 3. References:  Your team must include four (4) credible references (not including the textbook) per assignment to add validity to your answers. Your textbook does not count as a reference. You should avoid Internet sources, except certain government or association sites (e.g., OSHA). Use the Troy library online to conduct your research.  Identify references based on APA Style.  Endnotes and Web sites are included in your textbook. the Assignments area of Blackboard. 3 Supplementary Readings are posted in Attachment 2: 4. Evaluation: Preparation of TB (continued) TB assignments will be evaluated based on the following criteria.  Content (65%): Integration of appropriate, relevant course concepts; quality of analysis; focusing on specifics, not generalities; and thoroughness (pertains to scope and depth of coverage).  Organization (20%): Use of these guidelines, applicable section headings, and relevant exhibits; inclusion of relevant research; and flow.  Professionalism (15%): Demonstrated evidence of the 3 Ps: Adequate preparation, pride of workmanship, and proficiency in the use of good communication skills - writing style and comprehensibility (grammar and punctuation). Reponses must be concise, incisive, and literate.  Rubric: A Rubric, based on the above criteria, will be utilized to grade the TB assignments. 4 Attachment 3: Hotel Paris Case Questions TB Assignment #1 Instructions:  The Policies/Guidelines: Team-Based (TB) Assignments are applicable to TB #1.  See the Hotel Paris cases at the end of the following chapters: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 in the Dessler text.  This course focuses on global HRM policies and practices. It is expected your team’s responses to the following questions indicate potential global implications, as appropriate and relevant, in your final team submission. NOTE: To emphasize the application of HRM policies and practices globally, even-numbered teams must focus on the Hotel Paris locations in France and odd-numbered teams must focus on the Hotel Paris location in Italy in your final team submission. I suggest that 1 or 2 references focus on “hotel operations” in your assigned country.  Support for each question/issue is expected! See Attachment 2 for guidance.  Space guidelines: 13 – 15 pages, based on the required outline/bulleted format. See Attachment 2 for guidance.  Turnitin is not required for individual student submissions.  Due date: See the Assignments area of Bb – Week 6. The specific due date will be announced. Questions: 1. Strategic Management/Strategic HRM. Draw a more simplified, abbreviated Strategy Map for the Hotel Paris. Utilize the hierarchy of links that includes the following areas: (a) Hotel’s HR policies and practices; (b) Necessary employee competencies, behaviors, and skills; and (c) Three (3) required strategic goals or outcomes. See Figure 3-6 in your text for guidance. 2. HR Metrics. Based on Figure 3-9 and Table 3-1, identify the four (4) most appropriate metrics the Hotel Paris should use to measure its HR practices. Be sure to provide support for your selected metrics. 3. Recruitment Sources. Based on the hotel’s required employee competencies behaviors, and skills, stipulate the three (3) most effective recruiting sources (internal and/or outside sources) the Hotel Paris should utilize. Be sure to provide support for your selection of recruiting sources. 4. Measurement of Recruiting Effectiveness. What approach would you suggest the hotel use to measure the effectiveness of its recruiting efforts? Support is expected. 5 5. Employee Tests: Personality. The Hotel Paris has employees in several job categories: frontdesk clerk, valet, door greeter, security guard, service positions (housekeeping and food service), and assistant manager. Select two (2) of the above jobs and provide examples of two (2) personality test items you would suggest the hotel use to select employees for these jobs. Provide specific support for your suggestions. 6. Employee Testing. Based on your analysis of the Hotel Paris’ situation in prior questions, recommend two (2) other types of tests you would recommend Lisa use in the selection process. Provide support for your recommendations. 7. Interviewing. Based on the jobs of front-desk clerk and assistant manager, develop two (2) questions in each of the following areas: situational, behavioral, and job knowledge. Be sure to provide descriptive good/average/poor answers for each question. See Figures 7-2 and 7-3 for guidance. 8. Performance Management and Appraisal. Performance management involves defining, measuring, motivating and developing an employee’s goal-oriented performance on a continuing basis (Dessler, p. 261). Based on the job of front-desk clerk, address the following: (a) Attach a job description for the position of hotel front-desk clerk specifically designed for the Hotel Paris. Notes: Numerous sources of generic job descriptions for a front desk clerk are available – see chapter 4. It is feasible the job description will require modifications based on the strategic goals of the Hotel Paris and your team’s assigned country. (b) The majority of companies use traditional performance appraisal techniques to assess employee performance. Based on the job description for the position of hotel front-desk clerk provided in (a), recommend the most appropriate performance tool/technique Lisa should use for the Hotel Paris. Provide support for your recommendation. (c) Based on the performance technique recommended in (b), select two (2) areas (competencies, goals, performance standards, and/or skills). Indicate the approach the Hotel Paris should use to assess these. 9. Employee Retention, Engagement, and Careers. The Hotel Paris recognizes that career management plays a significant role in engaging and retaining employees. Based on this premise, address the following. (a) “Many hotel jobs are inherently ‘dead end’; for example, maids, laundry employees, and valets either have not great aspirations to move up, or are just using these jobs temporarily to help out with household expenses.” Do you agree with this statement – why or why not? (b) Recommend two (2) additional specific career activities Lisa should implement for employees in the above job categories. 6
