We all have favorites--we know what we love, and we definitely know what we hate. Explaining why exactly we have those feelings, though, proves much more difficult. For this essay, move beyond simply saying something is "good" or "bad," and instead offer a reasoned evaluation of what leads to these impressions. Pick a subject you feel like you can critique: I'd like you to choose a music album, a song, music video, a movie, or a television program. I feel like these topics are complex enough to lend sufficient material for a longer discussion. If you feel like reviewing some other kind of subject (Superbowl, Kid's Choice Awards), that's fine, just talk to me about it first. No matter what you pick, I am expecting a well-developed and detailed explanation that justifies your overall evaluation To accomplish this task offectively, you'll need to: 1. Establish context: What world does your subject occupy? Does it fit into a certain genre? What are the motivations behind fitting into that genre? How does your subject compare to its contemporaries (other artists/shows/films working within that same genre)? What topics or issues are conventional in the genre? Is your subject a game changer, or is it failing to do anything fresh, provocative, or progressive? If you are looking at an album, consider what that artist has done in the past to use as a comparison 2. Establish criteria: Criteria are the building blocks of evaluation what standards are used in recognizing a genre or style? What are the rules and conventions? Considering criteria will help you find more specific ways of measuring effectiveness within subject. What makes a family sitcom a good family sitcom? What do we expect when watching one, and how does differing from those standards influence an audience's reaction? How is it different from a cop drama? It wouldn't make sense to evaluate a Metallica album simply as "rock music, because "rock" is far too large an umbrella term. Think of connections you can make within a genre in order to settle on criteria. I would also like you to find and respond to another critic looking at your subject. What are people saying about your subject? Do you agree with them, or are they missing something that you appreciate? Find one outside source (another review) for this essay. Don't forget, a portion of your essay grade will come from you demonstrating process, so for the final draft, include your peer review notes and evidence of planning/brainstorming that went into your essay
