Assignment: Plates and Structural Geography Exploration
Geologic maps have special symbols that tell where faults and folds exist. Many maps also have
cross sections drawn. A cross section shows how the rocks are deformed and makes it easier to
understand the forces involved. Use this geologic map to complete the following investigation.
Geologic Structure from Maps: Part 1 Geologic Map
1. Study the map and cross section. There are five rock layers shown, A through E. Color each
layer a different color. Use the letters in the layers to help you.
2. Sediments are almost always deposited in flat layers. Does it appear that forces in the Earth
affected the rock layers in this region? What clues do you have?
3. Did pushing (compression), pulling (tension), or sideways forces (shear) in the rock layers
produce the folds and faults?

Geologic Structure from Maps: Part 2 Online photos
Now view page and photos in the lesson on the pages following the assignment page. The
pictures are of faults around the world. See if you are able to tell which types of faults caused the
rocks to form each structure.
You know how forces on rocks can cause rocks to bend or fold, or under some conditions, cause
the rocks to fracture. Forces can also move rock up and down. You can use what you know to
look at your community and describe what forces may have caused a certain landform to look a
certain way. Use the online photos to answer the following questions:
Look at the photograph of faulted rock layers in British Columbia, Canada.
4. Do the rocks appear to have been pushed together, pulled apart, or to have slid past each
other to make this formation? What type of fault is this? (4 points)
Look at the photograph of a fault found in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
5. Was the rock pulled apart, pushed together, or did it slide past another rock to make this
formation? What type of fault is this? (4 points)

NSCI103 University of Maryland University College Carbon Rich Asteroids Questions
1. As mentioned in an earlier of this project, occasionally an asteroid fragment makes its way to Earth. As the fragment falls through the atmosphere, it is heated and some of the material is vaporized. Explain how you could determine the composition of this hot vaporized material from the light it emits. (15 points) 2. Some asteroid fragments end up on the surface of Earth. It is possible for such a fragment to be radioactive. What is the chief cause of radioactivity? If you had a radiation detector that could measure the amount of radiation but not the type of radiation, how could you determine which type of radiation was being emitted? (15 points) 3. How could the age of this fragment be determined? (10 points) 4. Asteroids are mainly composed of metals like iron and nonmetals like carbon. Explain at least three differences between metals and nonmetals and describe the locations of metals and non-metals within the periodic table. Specifically use iron and carbon in your explanation. (15 points) 5. If the asteroid fragment contains carbon, it may burn when entering Earth's atmosphere. What is the most likely compound to result from this process? Which type of chemical bond would result from this process? Of the types chemical reactions studied in this course, which type would this be? Be sure to fully explain all your answers. (15 points) 6. Asteroids can be classified into two broad groups based on their composition and location: carbon-rich asteroids dominate the outer part of the asteroid belt, whereas metal-rich asteroids dominate the inner part of the belt. Analysis of the fragment we have discussed in this project reveals that it contains nearly equal amounts of metals and carbon. Can you conclude that the original whole asteroid had a similar composition? Can you conclude with a high degree of confidence that the asteroid originated in the middle regions of the asteroid belt? Explain your reasoning. If you would need more data from the asteroid analysis, what would you like to see? (15 points) 7. The Law of Conservation of Energy tells us that "energy cannot be created nor destroyed." At the center of our Solar System is the Sun, and the Sun is constantly generating energy allowing Earth to have habitable conditions for life to exist. What is the source of the Sun's energy? Does the Law of Conservation of Energy apply here? Explain your answer. (15 points).

BIO201 Colorado State Alcohol Abuse in Youths Community Action Plan Paper
Your Portfolio Project for this class is a Community Action Plan designed to alleviate or correct a public health issue in your community. Your community can be your business, school, neighborhood, town or city of residence or birth, or county. For Option #2, your Community Action Plan will be a professional portfolio that includes a written report and a handout. Below are some useful sites where you can find examples of the elements of an action plan.http://www.myhio.org/sites/default/files/HIO%20Community%20Action%20Plan%202013.pdfhttp://www.epa.gov/communityhealth/ (Links to an external site.)http://www.cityofchicago.org/dam/city/depts/cdph/tobacco_alchohol_and_drug_abuse/LGBTCommunityActionPlanHC.pdf (Links to an external site.)http://assets.thehcn.net/content/sites/arizona/MC_CHA2012.pdf (Links to an external site.)Preliminary Deliverables: These deliverables must be submitted in the assigned week:Week 2: Written Response and Project Selection (20 points): Provide a one-paragraph response indicating which assignment option and public health issue you have selected and why. This will help your instructor to be aware of your plans and support you with development of this project. Upload your response as a Word document.Week 7: Preliminary Written Report and Peer Review Feedback (30 points) Submit a preliminary (rough) draft of the written portion of your portfolio project as well as proof of peer review. Remember to include the following sections: introduction, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, cure, and summary. Peer review feedback is also included in this assignment. Create a post that includes your written report as an attachment using the Portfolio Project Milestone discussion forum for peer review feedback. Provide feedback to at least one of your classmates. Choose a classmate with no other feedback first, to ensure that everyone receives some feedback from their peers. In this preliminary draft submission, indicate which project you responded to.Final Paper Instructions:The final case study should include four sections (Symptoms, Diagnosis, Cure, and Prevention). Each section should be about 1 page in length. Your entire paper must be 4-5 pages in length, not counting the title or reference pages, which must be included. Your paper must follow the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. (Links to an external site.)You must cite and integrate at least 2 credible sources in each of the four sections of the paper. You may use readings other than the textbook to meet this requirement. The paper should be based on references to scholarly materials (rather than on introductory textbooks, popular website writings, or musings, for example) and should support your claims with evidence.Incorporate into this final plan any classmates’ critiques that you found useful as well as your instructor’s feedback.List the key community members or partners that you plan on contacting, with an explanation why these individuals or organizations make sense as potential partners. This could include your list of potential partners created in week 4 Critical Thinking Assignment Option #1, or your interview of one key partner completed in week 4 Critical Thinking Option #2.Include a special emphasis on either the demographics of the affected population or the economic implications, depending on what Critical Thinking assignment you completed for Week 5.Include a realistic timeline for your plan. Discuss the time needed for campaigning, education, funding, building, and implementation. Use ideas created during week 6 Critical Thinking Assignments, either the option for annotated bibliography or that for the brainstorming draft feedback.Final Instructions for the Handout:The handout that you will distribute to audience members describes the problem in your community and your action plan. You may design this as an outline of your presentation or as a brochure to accompany your presentation with highlighted key points. The purpose of this handout is both to educate the audience about the issue and to help them follow along with you as you speak. Keep in mind that in real life you will have limited time to convince people of the gravity of the situation and to come on board with their support, so you want to be persuasive and get to the key points quickly and effectively.Your handout must be supported by at least two scholarly articles.
