Question description

The spring constant is k=200N/m

The spring compression distance (x) is 15cm

The mass of the cart is 500g and the mass of the target is 250g

The cart is pulled back against the spring compressing it. When the cart is released, the cart rolls forward across the table (no friction). The cart collides into a hanging target and causes it to swing upward. The cart and target are not attached after the collision as shown in the diagram. The cart is moving at a speed of 1m/s after the collision.

a) Is this collision elastic or inelastic? Explain.

b) What height does the target reach?
