The readings in Parts II and III of your textbook argue that racism is a contemporary problem in the United States, not a historical one. Many of the selections describe ongoing differences in outcomes across races, including on such measures as education and income. Since it has been conclusively demonstrated that "race" is not a biological concept that could account for such vast differences in ability, it must be that such disparity is the result of how institutions function and how individuals behave. While some whites report that they do not seem to benefit from the power-imbalance described in these writings, and thus argue that they have no share in the blame for the persistence of racial inequality, some authors point out that the benefits of whiteness may be invisible to those who redeem them. In her essay entitled "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," for example, Peggy McIntosh provides a list of advantages to being white that many people benefit from, even unknowingly. Read this list. Have you enjoyed such benefits? Do you think you enjoyed these benefits because of your race? If you have not enjoyed such benefits, do you think that racism is to blame? Based on your perspective as a result of all of the assigned readings, do you see racism as a comtemporary problem in America? Why or why not?

QUESTION 1 1. In her essay entitled "Los Intersticios," Evelyn Alsultany argues that attempts to analyze her racial and ethnic identity may be attempts to either "otherize" her or to identify with her in a way that may be illusory. True False 4 points QUESTION 2 1. Alsultany argues that attempts to pigeonhole her complex identity into solely an Arab Muslim identity or a Cuban identity are motivated by a prejudice that she cannot understand. True False 4 points QUESTION 4 1. Tafoya argues that Latinos' decision to identify as white or as some other race exclusively reflects permanent markers such as skin color. True False 4 points QUESTION 5 1. Sonia Shah, in her essay entitled "Asian American?" argues that the term "Asian American" is problematic because it fails to accurately reflect how most people who would be dubbed "Asian American" think of themselves. True False 4 points QUESTION 6 1. In her essay entitled "The Myth of the Model Minority," Noy Thrupkaew suggests that the myth of the model Asian minority persists in part because it accords well with the conservative view that personal values like dedication and hard-work determine life outcome. True False 4 points QUESTION 7 1. Thrupkaew suggests that the myth of Asians as a model minority also persists because poverty rates among poor Asians are still much lower than they are among "nonmodel" minorities such as African-Americans and Latinos. True False 4 points QUESTION 8 1. In Carrie Ching's essay entitled "Personal Voices," it is argued that the racist ideology that sustains a race-based power-hierarchy in American culture is largely an institutional, not individual, problem.
