introductions, what is science to you
'Objective' truth: the kind of truth that is true whether you believe it or not. You may ask, "Isn't all truth like that? Its just true, and if you doubt it, you're wrong?" Well, no actually. Consider this statement: "Walmart's shelves will be well stocked at closing." That statement will be true only as long as people believe it will be true. Once people people begin to doubt it, the shelves become bare. Our lives are greatly affected by these more fickle truths, so much so that governments even try to quantify it with reports like the Consumer Confidence Index. That is proper because society should study these things. Not being an objective truth does not make them unimportant or inconsequential.Know your science. To be blunt, these more fickle phenomena are not science, but a lot of people want you to believe that they are. Science has an amazing amount of credibility with the public, and there are those who want to borrow that credibility for their own ends. Their opponents will call it 'junk science', while supporters throw back charges of 'anti-science'. A firm understanding of the scientific method will help navigate these turbulent debates. Science is reproducible, testable, and doesn't depend on popular moods.assignment:In another paragraph, comment on the other material I posted for this module, especially the item labeled "The Scientific Method, Truth, and all that . . ." There are several topics of conversation there; you need only pick one. Did the discussion of different categories of truth strike a philosophical chord in you that you would like to express? Does the Ulcer story remind you of anyone or any event in your experience? What do you think of the fraud, or the irreproducible science? Can you find another fraud case worth discussing? Can you suggest changes to the system to make reproducibility a stronger priority? There's a lot of food for thought there.
