n this assignment you will investigate a public artwork that was surrounded by controversy. You will also select a different public artwork to discuss. If possible, please try to find and discuss a work that has not been previously chosen in your group.

Research a public artwork in your community or online Answer all of the following (Create a single post to answer Part #1 and #2. Respond to at least one classmate). Copy/paste or type your response directly into the discussion thread rather than uploading a word document. 1) Richard Serra created one of the most controversial artworks of the 1980s in his public artwork Tilted Arc. Investigate his work and answer the questions below. Your research into the artist/artwork must be clearly evident in your response; within your answer, make specific reference to the assigned material. a) After learning more about this work, in your opinion, what makes Serra’s Tilted Arc art? b) Do you think that Serra’s Tilted Arc should have been removed? Why or why not? 2) Now, research a different public artwork that interests you. Consider a piece of public art that is beloved by a wide audience, a controversial example, and/or select an artwork located in your own community (think about art on USF’s campus, in parks, or public buildings, etc.). To avoid unnecessary repetition, please try to choose something that has not already been discussed in your group. a) Identify the work (artist name, title, material/media, dimensions, date, and location) and attach, embed, or link an image of the chosen work in your post. If you choose to embed a large image, please re-size it first so that it fits the screen. Ensure that your image is not password protected (e.g. linked or copied from a social media site or private email). b) Which of the five “purposes of art” detailed in the presentation would you say the work could be categorized? Explain. c) What was the intent or purpose of the public work chosen? What does it communicate to you? Do you believe the artist(s) effectively conveyed their ideas and concepts? Why or why not? d) How was the work funded? Was it publicly funded? Whether or not your chosen work received public funding, are you in favor of such works receiving such funding? Some public artworks, such as Tilted Arc, are considered site specific. Did the artist(s) of your chosen work take into account the site/location or community? 3) Respond thoughtfully to one other group-mate’s post. A rubric with points and specific grading criteria is attached to the assignment in Canvas and will be used in evaluation. Communicates ideas and purpose clearly and with sophistication. Beyond understanding of issues, shows insight. Paragraph structure consistently and effectively supports content. Clear logic and effective transitions. Points are developed logically, coherently and extensively with convincing, specific supporting details and researched examples. Strong evidence of critical thinking. No factual errors. Choice of language consistently precise, purposeful. Nearly flawless sentence structure, usage, mechanics contribute to writer’s ability to communicate purpose. Stays on topic most of the time. Shows a good understanding of the topic or parts of the topic, however, missed select concepts and/or did not fully answer the questions assigned. Shows full understanding of issues. Paragraph structure uniformly supports content. Consistency, logic and transitions well managed. Stays on topic some of the time. Central ideas are evident but lack clarity. Does not seem to understand the topics very well. Adheres to purpose, fulfills assignment, shows adequate understanding of key issues. Incompletely addresses assigned topic or directions, shows need for more study of issues. Loose focus on central idea, contains some repetition and digression, does not fully understand key issues. Paragraph structure weak. Consistency, logic and transitions show major weaknesses. Style uneven. Ideas and points are evident but support is very general and/or inconsistent. Several factual errors. Consistency, logic and transitions show some weaknesses. Development of ideas and points evident but supported by a mixture of generalizations and specific detail. Some factual errors. Word choice correct but simple/ without variety. Errors in mechanics and/ or usage may partially obscure content of assignment. Frequent errors in word choice.
