The information technologydriven media is increasingly used for communication, research processes, job-seeking, and marketing. In this paper, the researcher proposes to investigate the impacts of social media on employment opportunities in Oman. The study will focus on commercial organizations, individual job seekers, and society in general. The investigation will be guided by the research question: How does social media affect employment in Oman. The researcher proposes to adopt a qualitative research design using a purposive sampling frame. The Impact of Social Media on Employment in Oman Introduction The phenomenal growth in information technology has brought forth new ways of communication and information sharing. Over the past decade, digital technology has shaped the development of social media platforms (Venkateswaran et al., 2019). Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have gained considerable popularity among individuals and organizations in Oman. Social media channels are typically used for day-to-day communication, data sharing, delivery of news, and commercial advertisement (Pourkhani et al., 2019). These activities profoundly influence business operations and can contribute to the economic prosperity of the country. In particular, social media can positively influence the employment prospects in Oman. With businesses and individuals relying on the platforms and the growing number of youths subscribing to the plan, the influence of social media platforms on employment cannot be discounted. Statement of the Problem Oman has traditionally relied on television and radio as the major forms of communication. These traditional communication methods served the business world because the target market considered them the ultimate source of reliable and trustworthy information. However, with the changing demographics in Oman to a more youthful population averaging 29 years (median), businesses are forced to consider the most acceptable form of communication for young people. While traditional media houses continue to have sway in society, the power of social media in marketing continues to increase (Venkateswaran et al., 2019). Companies that ignore the novel communication technology risk losing out on their competitors. With a penetration of 56%, the impact of social media on the economy is expected to grow into the foreseeable future. Despite the significance of technology, most business organizations have not integrated social media platforms in their official communication strategies. Research Objectives i. This research proposal aims at establishing the impact of social media in Oman. The focus of the research will be on determining the potential influence of social media on business and employment opportunities. The research objectives will be to: ii. Determine the popularity of social media in Oman and the benefits of using social media iii. Determine how social media technology platforms impact the Omanis. iv. Establish how social media can influence the prospects of job seekers and the role of the government in enhancing the penetration of social media. v. Establish the overall impact of social media on employment in Oman. Research questions The researcher will be guided by the following questions: i. What are the popular social media channels in Oman and how do business organizations use them in their routine activities? ii. How can social media platforms business outcomes in Oman? iii. How can the government support business growth through social media development? Literature Review Al-Badi and Al-Qayoudhi (2014) researched the impacts of public networking sites on commercial activities and ways in which the sites can transform day to day ordinary people’s lives. The researchers collected data from 130 respondents in a qualitative study that focused on private commercial organizations using social media sites. The researcher concluded that the impact of social media uses in Oman and how it affects educational outcomes (Al-Badi & AlQayoudhi, 2014). Social media can positively impact organizational operations by enhancing data sharing among stakeholders and marketing company products to enhance sales revenues. These findings are supported by Pourkhani et al. (2019) who argued that social media are an integral component of modern marketing practices. An integrated digital marketing strategy helps an organization in reaching target markets through various social media channels that are relevant to the specific demographics in the population. Al-Rahmi and Othman (2013) investigated the impact of social media on academic performance. The researcher sought to estimate the popularity of social media sites among university students in Oman. The author employed a qualitative research design and concluded that social media are instrumental in enhancing educational outcomes. They support the learning process by acting as a platform for data sharing in research, communication, and learning (AlRahmi & Othman, 2013). Social sites such as Facebook help learners in Oman to connect with multiple learning groups as well as education systems making the learning process convenient. The integrated learning process opens up new technology-driven learning strategies that directly and indirectly open employment opportunities. Al-Ghafri and Al-Badi (2016) examined the role of social media in personality development. The investigators noted that strong self-esteem is vital when making decisions that drive an enterprise towards strong profitability. The ability of social media users to connect with several online users can boost individual self-perception enhancing quality decision-making within the business environment (Pourkhani et al., 2019). This process is likely to result in effective organizational decisions with growth in revenues and profitability. Furthermore, the technology enables job seekers to connect easily with potential job seekers leading to better chances of securing employment opportunities. The resultant net effect is the creation of employment opportunities for the locals. Research Methodology Research Hypothesis This research proposal hypothesizes that increased use of social media technology increases employment opportunities in the country. As more enterprises adopt social media sites, the country is likely to experience more business opportunities resulting in the creation of new employment opportunities. Sampling Plan This research proposal will adopt a non-random purposive sampling method relying on the judgment of the researcher to select appropriate respondents. This method is suitable for the research because it is cost-effective and consumes limited time (Taylor et al., 2015). Furthermore, the research topic requires prior information about individuals and organizations that are actively engaged in social media. This fact makes purposive sampling ideal for the research. A sample of 130 social media users will be recruited to collect data. Data Collection The researcher will collect data using a questionnaire structured to ensure that the data collected reflects the impact of social media on employment opportunities. The researcher will send completed questionnaires to selected respondents using social media platforms that respective respondents use. Using social media platforms will allow the researcher to follow up with respondents who may not have completed and submitted questionnaires within the agreed time. Plan of Analysis Data analysis is critical in the research process. The researcher proposes to adopt a qualitative descriptive design to analyze data collected during the research. This process will entail reading through the collected data and looking for similarities or aspects of conflict and evaluating themes and categories that dominate data findings. Significance of the Study Research on the impacts of social media on employment is significant for several reasons. The findings will be used to advise learners, organizations, and government agencies in making decisions that impact social media use. For learners, this research will offer insight into ways they can integrate social media to secure employment opportunities. Organizations can benefit from the research findings to accelerate specific ways of expanding and improving business outcomes using social media (Venkateswaran et al., 2019). Lastly, the findings can be used by government agencies to develop policy guidelines that foster the development and expansion of social media in the country as a vehicle toward economic development and employment creation. Conclusion The role of social media platforms in modern society continues to gain prominence. Individuals and organizations should continually evolve to accommodate and integrate the growing influence of social networking sites to enhance employability and to drive the realization of strategic organizational goals. A research process that offers insight into the impacts of social media on employment in Oman is welcome because of the growing acceptance of the technology in the Middle-Eastern country.
