When Mitch demands that Blanche Dubois reveal her features to him under a bright light, he justifies his request by claiming that this is “just realistic.” To this, Blanche replies, “I don’t want realism. I want magic! I try to give that to people. I misrepresent things to them. I don’t tell the truth, I tell what ought to be truth.” (page 117) In this statement, Blanche is suggesting that people are better off living at least some of their lives in an unrealistic world, shielded from those aspects of reality that might cause complications. She claims that believing in what ought to be, instead of what is, will lead to at least a little happiness in a world full of disappointments.
