Close Reading Exercise: Astounding Stories OverviewA close reading is a study of the detail in a short section of a text and an explanation of how that detail and that section are related to the entire text. In thinking about literature, you should always refer back to the detail of a text as well as to its grander effects. The project requires critical thinking and concise writing.Prewriting ProcessChoose a short story from the 1931 edition of Astounding Stories (Links to an external site.), taking notes while reading. Look for patterns, tensions, or questions that emerged in what you noticed.Choose a short passage that you can focus on. The passage should be a key section of the work, and should contain concrete imagery. Consider whether this passage reinforces, adds a new dimension, or subverts the themes as worked out in other parts of the work? How? Why? How does this section help you to understand the entire piece?Consider how the concrete imagery in the section is working. Does the image work as a symbol in some way? Does it affect your emotions or intellect or understanding of the story?Carefully comb through all the words, using the margins to record your thoughts. Note the figures of speech. Look at word choice. Pay attention to the details.Decide on a thesis, create a structure for your paper that will support that thesis, and then use evidence from the text to support your main points. (This becomes your outline.)Writing ProcessQuote the passage (or transcript) directly, set off at the top of the page like an epigraph.Create a title that captures the heart of your thesis.Briefly summarize the passage.Place this section within the context of the whole text. specific philosophical problems within a certain historical context as part of the larger
philosophical tradition, but they are also responding to a conversation (discourse) within the
Black intellectual tradition, as well. In your estimation, why is this conversation (discourse)
within and beyond the Black experience significant to the larger presentation of philosophical
traditions and schools of thought? This conversation (discourse) can relate to a specific author/
philosopher and their presentation of philosophical ideas or it can directly relate to the overall
philosophical themes discussed in class (i.e. racism, education, etc.). INCLUDE THESE FOUR PHILOSOPHERS: MALCOLM X, W.E.B. DUBOIS,WILLIAM R. JONES,MARTIN LUTHER KING. Critically analyze and examine:
•How a specific philosopher addresses the philosophical problems within the Black
philosophical experience as it relates to the larger philosophical tradition. (Is there a Black
Philosophy? and if so, what makes it a Black philosophy and why is it necessary? How does
Black Philosophy relate to Black Studies?)
